Do GRC Manufacturers' Products Crack Easily? Exploring the Causes of Cracking and Crack Prevention Methods of Quality Manufacturers

“Are GRC products prone to cracking?” This is the biggest question on the minds of many customers, especially those who have suffered the consequences of poor-quality GRC. Cracking is one of the most common defects of GRC products; it spoils the appearance, undermines durability, and can even endanger safety. Frankly speaking, poor-quality GRC is indeed prone to cracking; but high-quality GRC, provided it is correctly designed and constructed, offers outstanding crack resistance. The key issue lies not in the material itself, but in the material design, production processes, and quality control behind it. This article takes an in-depth look at the main causes of GRC cracking and reveals how quality manufacturers fundamentally prevent it through systematic measures.

Main Types and Causes of GRC Cracking:

1. Plastic shrinkage cracks: These occur within a few hours after pouring, while the concrete is still in a plastic state. Although UHPC has a low water-binder ratio, if the rate of surface water evaporation exceeds the rate at which internal bleed water rises, the surface will develop fine mesh-like cracks due to restrained shrinkage. Causes: untimely curing, high ambient wind speed, high temperature, dry air.

2. Drying shrinkage cracks: As moisture inside GRC continues to evaporate, the material undergoes drying shrinkage. When shrinkage is restrained (e.g., by internal steel reinforcement, molds, or connectors), tensile stress builds up and causes cracking. Causes: excessively high cement content, excessively high water-binder ratio, insufficient curing, oversized components without shrinkage joints.

3. Thermal stress cracks: GRC hydration generates heat; large-volume components develop large temperature differences between inside and outside, or drastic ambient temperature changes cause uneven thermal expansion and contraction, producing cracks. Causes: insufficient internal temperature control in large-volume components, large day-night temperature differences, improper curing temperature control.

4. Structural stress cracks: Caused by inadequate design loads, collisions during transport or hoisting, uneven loading during installation, or substrate deformation. Causes: structural design flaws, insufficient reinforcement, improper construction operations.

5. Alkali-aggregate reaction cracks: Alkalis in the cement react chemically with active silica in the aggregates, forming an expansive gel that leads to internal expansion and cracking. Causes: use of alkali-reactive aggregates and high-alkali cement.

How do quality GRC manufacturers systematically prevent cracking?

A technically mature GRC manufacturer builds “crack-resistant genes” into every stage, from formulation and design to production and curing.

1. Scientific material formulation design: ◦ Optimized mix proportions: Strictly controlling cement content and water-binder ratio, and incorporating large amounts of active admixtures such as silica fume and fly ash, not only increases strength but also effectively reduces drying shrinkage and creep. A quality manufacturer's mix proportions are “confidential formulas” verified through extensive testing. ◦ Use of low-alkali cement and inert aggregates: Fundamentally eliminates the risk of alkali-aggregate reaction. ◦ Incorporation of crack-resistant fibers and shrinkage-reducing agents: Alkali-resistant glass fiber is the core of GRC crack resistance; its uniform distribution effectively suppresses the propagation of microcracks. In addition, polymer fibers or specialized shrinkage-reducing agents (SRA) can be added to further reduce shrinkage stress.

2. Refined production process control: ◦ Uniform mixing and fiber dispersion: High-power mixers are used to ensure that fibers are evenly dispersed throughout the matrix, avoiding localized weak spots. Companies such as Qinglong GRC use advanced mixing processes to ensure that fibers are distributed in a three-dimensional random orientation, forming an effective crack-resistant network. ◦ Vacuum dewatering process: After forming, vacuum treatment extracts excess water and air bubbles, greatly increasing density and reducing original defects and sources of shrinkage. ◦ Strict curing regime: This is the most critical step in preventing early cracking. Quality manufacturers immediately apply standardized wet curing or steam curing after demolding, keeping the surface moist for an extended period to ensure full hydration and slow drying, greatly reducing plastic and drying shrinkage. Natural curing or insufficient water curing is the most common cause of on-site cracking.

3. Rational structural design and detailing measures: ◦ Crack resistance considered at the detailed design stage: Reinforcing ribs are added where components are prone to stress concentration; oversized panels are reasonably divided with joints; steel mesh is designed appropriately, with its position and cover thickness being crucial. ◦ Optimized embedded part design: Embedded parts are avoided in stress concentration areas such as corners, and measures such as flexible connections are adopted to release stress.

4. Professional installation guidance and finished product protection: ◦ Detailed installation drawings are provided to ensure that connection joints can release a certain amount of deformation stress. ◦ Correct transport, hoisting, and stacking methods are specified to prevent mechanical damage. ◦ Post-installation joint treatment is emphasized, using flexible sealants to accommodate temperature-induced deformation.

Conclusion: Therefore, whether GRC products are prone to cracking is not an inherent property of the material, but a touchstone of its quality and level of systematic control. Choosing a manufacturer like Qinglong GRC—one with a scientific formulation system, precise production processes, strict curing conditions, and extensive engineering experience—means products with excellent crack resistance. At the same time, customers must also follow the manufacturer's guidance for transport, storage, and installation. Through the joint efforts of supplier and customer across the entire chain of materials, design, and construction, GRC cracking can be effectively prevented and controlled, making it a lasting, beautiful outer garment for buildings.
