In curtain wall selection, weight is a key parameter affecting structural loads, foundation costs, and construction efficiency. UHPC curtain wall panels offer an overwhelming weight advantage over natural stone curtain wall panels, making them an important choice for building lightweighting and rapid construction. Comparing the most commonly used thicknesses, a 20mm-thick UHPC panel has an areal density of approximately 50kg/㎡, while a 30mm-thick granite stone panel has an areal density of approximately 84kg/㎡. This means that even though the UHPC panel is thinner, its weight per unit area is still about 40% lower than that of stone. If compared at equal thickness (e.g., 25mm), UHPC (approximately 62.5kg/㎡) is about 10% lighter than granite (approximately 70kg/㎡), while UHPC's mechanical properties far exceed those of stone.
This significant weight advantage brings a series of engineering benefits. First, it greatly reduces the loads on the building's main structure and foundation. For super high-rise buildings, renovation of older buildings with limited structural capacity, or regions with seismic design requirements, adopting UHPC curtain walls can save considerable structural material and reduce overall costs. Second, it simplifies the supporting keel system. Lighter panels mean the required supporting steel keel sections can be smaller and the strength requirements for connectors are lowered, further saving steel and cost. Third, it improves construction safety and efficiency. Lighter individual panels are easier to handle manually and hoist mechanically, enabling faster installation and higher safety, with correspondingly lower requirements for lifting equipment.
In addition, UHPC's weight advantage is also reflected in transport economics—the same transport vehicle can carry a larger area of UHPC panels. In the Yirui Biotechnology Building project in Shenzhen, Qinglong leveraged the lightweight properties of UHPC to successfully add a large decorative facade onto the existing structure without requiring large-scale reinforcement of the main structure. Therefore, from a whole-life-cycle perspective, the lightweight nature of UHPC curtain walls not only reduces the weight of the material itself but, through a chain reaction, creates comprehensive cost advantages across multiple stages including structure, construction, and logistics, making it an ideal choice for modern high-performance curtain walls.
