The strength of GRC is a core indicator for measuring its performance as a structural or decorative material, and its strength properties are significantly superior to those of traditional cement mortar. As the Qinglong Group with 28 years of experience in GRC R&D and application, we typically evaluate the mechanical properties of GRC comprehensively from three dimensions: flexural strength, compressive strength, and tensile strength. High-quality GRC can easily achieve a flexural strength above 15MPa, while premium products such as Qinglong's GRC typically maintain a flexural strength of 18-25MPa as verified by third-party testing—a figure 5 to 10 times that of traditional concrete—enabling it to meet design requirements such as large panel sizes and highly openwork patterns.
The exceptional strength of GRC stems from its composite material design concept. Ordinary concrete is a brittle material with high compressive strength but extremely low tensile strength. GRC, however, incorporates alkali-resistant glass fibres (mesh or chopped fibres) uniformly into the cement matrix so that the fibres bear the tensile stress, thereby greatly enhancing the material's tensile and flexural capacity. This fibre reinforcement gives GRC better ductility under bending, with obvious deformation warnings before failure rather than sudden brittle fracture. Qinglong GRC uses high-strength cement, a strictly controlled water-cement ratio, and optimised fibre content and distribution processes to ensure its strength performance is fully realised.
In engineering applications, the strength advantages of GRC translate into significant design freedom and safety. For example, in the Wuhan Hanxiu Theatre project, the red GRC curtain wall panels needed to bear their own dead loads and wind loads under complex shapes, and their excellent flexural strength was key to safety. At the Nanning New Media Center, the ability of large-area GRC double-curved panels to maintain structural stability also relies on the material's inherent high strength. Therefore, when evaluating the strength of GRC, one should not rely on a single figure alone, but should comprehensively assess its load-bearing capacity and safety reserves in actual projects by taking into account its toughness and its connection methods to the structure.
