The elastic modulus of UHPC typically falls in the range of 40-55GPa. Compared with its extremely high compressive strength (120-150MPa or even higher), the improvement in its elastic modulus is indeed not that significant, and it is difficult to generally break through the 55GPa ceiling. Analyzed from the perspectives of material composition and micromechanics, Qinglong Group finds that this phenomenon is mainly constrained by two major factors: the "upper limit of aggregate stiffness" and the "paste-dominated microstructure".
Elastic modulus is a material's ability to resist elastic deformation. In concrete-based materials, the elastic modulus is mainly determined by the modulus and volume fraction of each constituent phase (cement paste, aggregate). The elastic modulus of ordinary concrete is largely dominated by coarse aggregates with high elastic modulus (such as granite crushed stone, with a modulus of up to 50-90GPa). However, in pursuit of extreme densification and uniform fiber distribution, UHPC abandons ordinary coarse aggregates and uses only fine aggregates (such as quartz sand, with a modulus of about 70GPa). The modulus contribution of fine aggregates in composites is far inferior to that of coarse aggregates forming a rigid skeleton.
Therefore, the microstructure of UHPC is actually a continuous phase dominated by hydration products (cement paste), in which fine aggregates and fibers are dispersed. The elastic modulus of the cement paste matrix is relatively low (about 20-30GPa). Although UHPC makes its matrix very dense through a low water-binder ratio and microsilica filling, and the matrix modulus is improved to some extent, it is still essentially difficult to reach the level of high-grade coarse aggregates. This determines that the overall elastic modulus of UHPC composites has a "ceiling" limited by the performance of the cement paste matrix.
Although using aggregates with higher elastic modulus (such as corundum sand, with a modulus of about 400GPa) can raise the elastic modulus of UHPC to a certain extent, this brings new problems such as a sharp increase in cost and changes in workability. For the vast majority of construction engineering applications, an elastic modulus of 40-55GPa is already sufficient, and the high strength of UHPC to some extent compensates for its modulus not being extremely high. In material design, Qinglong performs targeted optimization according to the stiffness requirements of components, achieving the optimal balance among performance, processability, and cost. Understanding this characteristic helps engineers make more rational use of UHPC's high-strength properties and compensate for its stiffness characteristics through structural design.
