UHPC technology is far from reaching its ceiling; research and practice worldwide are driving it toward higher performance, greater functionality, and greater intelligence. The R&D center of Qinglong Group is closely tracking and investing resources in the following cutting-edge directions to maintain its technological leadership.
Functional UHPC is an important direction of innovation. Future UHPC will serve not only as a structural material but also as a functional carrier. For example, the light-transmitting UHPC applied by Qinglong in the Shanghai Century Plaza project incorporates light-guiding materials to achieve artistic architectural lighting. In addition, self-cleaning UHPC (via photocatalytic coatings), thermally insulating UHPC (via lightweight aggregates or phase-change materials), and electrically conductive UHPC (with added conductive fibers) are also research hotspots, aiming to endow building materials with more intelligent and green attributes.
UHPC has enormous potential in composite applications with other materials. Combining UHPC with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) can produce ultra-light, ultra-strong structural components; combining it with foamed concrete can form composite panels with gradient properties; and combining it with sensors can create “smart structures” with self-monitoring capabilities. Qinglong is exploring the combination of UHPC with different materials at different scales to develop new products that meet specific functional requirements.
Digitalization and intelligent construction will profoundly change the way UHPC is applied. BIM-based parametric design, 3D printing technology, and robotic automated rebar placement and spraying will greatly enhance the design freedom and production efficiency of complex UHPC components. Qinglong has begun using 3D scanning and digital twin technologies for project quality management, and will further explore robotic automated production and installation in the future, driving the UHPC industry toward Industry 4.0. Together, these new directions sketch out an imaginative future landscape for UHPC technology.
