The price comparison between UHPC and ordinary concrete is a typical comparison of "initial material cost" versus "full life-cycle comprehensive value". In terms of sheer cubic-meter material unit price, UHPC typically costs 50 to 150 times more than ordinary C30/C50 concrete—an extremely large gap. However, this direct comparison ignores the vast differences between the two materials in performance, application methods, and ultimate benefits, which can easily lead to misleading decisions.
The disruptive difference in performance is the root of the price gap. Ordinary concrete is a typical brittle material with a compressive strength usually between 20-50MPa and extremely low tensile strength, requiring extensive reinforcement to be usable. UHPC can achieve a compressive strength above 150MPa, along with excellent tensile strength and toughness—its performance indicators represent an order-of-magnitude leap. This allows UHPC to be extremely thin (20-30mm), achieve very large spans, and require no reinforcement or only minimal reinforcement, which ordinary concrete simply cannot achieve. Therefore, the two materials are not homogeneous substitutes in the vast majority of application scenarios.
A scientific comparison should be based on "functional units" or "final outcomes". For example, building a pedestrian bridge that needs to embody a light, slender aesthetic: ordinary concrete would require a bulky, massive beam-slab structure with enormous material volume, whereas UHPC might need only an elegant thin shell. In this case, comparing the total cost of the two options (including structure and decoration), the UHPC solution may offer greater economy and aesthetic value. For building facades, UHPC decorative cladding panels weigh only 1/3 of natural stone, greatly reducing the load on the main structure and foundation costs, and their rapid dry-hanging installation also saves time and labor costs.
More importantly, there is the long-term cost. Ordinary concrete structures are prone to cracking, carbonation, and rebar corrosion, requiring regular maintenance. UHPC is extremely dense with outstanding durability, with a design life often exceeding a hundred years, and is virtually maintenance-free. When decades of maintenance and repair costs are factored in, the full life-cycle cost of UHPC may be far lower than that of ordinary concrete structures requiring frequent maintenance. Qinglong Group recommends adopting value engineering analysis when comparing design alternatives, taking comprehensive account of initial investment, operation and maintenance costs, service life, and overall social benefits in order to make the most economical choice.
