The cost difference between exterior GRC curtain walls and natural stone curtain walls is a whole-life-cycle comprehensive cost issue involving "initial material costs, installation costs, structural savings, and long-term maintenance expenses." Based on extensive project cost data analysis, Qinglong Group found that, under the same design effect and construction complexity, the initial project cost of GRC curtain walls (materials + installation) is typically 15%-30% lower than that of imported high-end stone (such as Italian Wood Grain and Spanish Beige), and roughly on par with or 5%-10% slightly higher than domestic premium granite. However, when considering the structural savings brought by its ultra-light properties, faster installation speed, and extremely low long-term maintenance costs, GRC curtain walls often offer significant economic advantages over the project's whole life cycle.
1) Material costs: The unit price of high-quality GRC panels is close to that of domestic premium granite but far below imported marble. GRC's advantage lies in its modeling capability—if complex moldings and reliefs were carved from stone, costs would grow geometrically. 2) Installation costs: Both use dry-hanging techniques, but GRC panels can be made larger and thinner, requiring fewer keels and anchors per unit area, resulting in higher installation efficiency and relatively lower labor costs. 3) Structural costs: This is GRC's "hidden savings" advantage. GRC's bulk density (approx. 2000 kg/m³) is only 74% of that of stone (approx. 2700 kg/m³). For high-rise buildings or large-span structures, using GRC can greatly reduce wall dead weight, thereby reducing the cross-sectional dimensions and reinforcement of beams, columns, and foundations, saving on main structure costs—savings that may reach tens or even hundreds of yuan per square meter.
This is the key to GRC's cost-effectiveness. Natural stone suffers from issues such as color variation, uncontrollable veining, and uneven weather resistance (e.g., some marbles are prone to weathering, water stains, and rust stains); later cleaning, protective treatment, or even partial panel replacement can be costly and pose safety hazards. High-quality GRC has uniform, stable color and excellent weather resistance, essentially achieving "maintenance-free" status, requiring only simple routine cleaning. Over a 30-year service cycle, GRC's maintenance costs may be only 1/5 to 1/3 of those of stone. In addition, GRC's design life usually exceeds 50 years, whereas some stones may require large-scale renovation after just 20-30 years.
Therefore, simply comparing unit material prices is one-sided. For projects pursuing unique styling, rapid construction, lightweight safety, and long-term low maintenance, GRC's comprehensive cost advantage is evident. Qinglong recommends that owners and designers adopt a "whole-life-cycle cost analysis" approach for decision-making, weighing initial construction costs together with operation, maintenance, and replacement costs over the coming decades. Under the concepts of green building and sustainable development, GRC—thanks to its strong moldability, light weight and high strength, durability, and low consumption—is becoming the rational choice for a growing number of high-end projects.
