Can the Colors of UHPC Shapes Achieve a Gradient Effect?

The color of UHPC forms can fully achieve rich and natural gradient effects, thanks to its flexible color integration technology, which is mainly realized through process routes such as "through-body layered casting coloring, surface spray coloring, and digital printing technology." The through-body layered casting coloring process is a classic method for achieving natural gradients. This method is completed during the UHPC casting stage. First, multiple UHPC mixes in different colors are prepared according to the design proportions. When casting into the mold, the casting sequence, position, and flow rate of the differently colored mixes are controlled so that they blend naturally at their interfaces, forming smooth color transitions. After curing and demolding, the color is consistent throughout, from the inside out, with excellent durability—there will be no exposed base layer even with slight surface wear. This method is particularly suitable for achieving large-area color variations with soft transitions, but it demands very high precision in production control.

Surface spray coloring technology offers greater flexibility and efficiency. For formed and fully cured plain UHPC panels, coloring can be applied by manual or robotic spraying. Using high-performance mineral pigments or specialty coatings, the color intensity and gradient effects in different areas can be precisely controlled by adjusting the spray gun's pressure, distance, and movement path. This method allows flexible color adjustment and is easy to modify, making it ideal for complex patterns or small-batch customization. To ensure color durability, a transparent fluorocarbon or polyurethane protective topcoat is usually applied to the surface after spraying.

Digital printing technology is a revolutionary means of achieving precise, complex patterns. Similar to large-format inkjet printing, the processed UHPC panel is placed under a flatbed printer, and the designed color pattern is printed directly onto the panel surface under computer control. This technology can achieve photographic image quality and extremely complex color gradients, virtually free of any pattern limitations. To ensure the adhesion and weather resistance of the printed pattern, special UV-curable inks or solvent-based inks must be selected, and a protective coating applied. Digital printing endows UHPC with unlimited visualization potential, making it a powerful vehicle for information communication and artistic expression.
