Compared with traditional components such as conventional concrete and natural stone, UHPC shaped components offer a disruptive lightweight advantage in weight, with weight reductions generally reaching 50% to 70%. This characteristic is revolutionary for reducing structural loads, simplifying construction and installation, and expanding design freedom. Qinglong Group's engineering data shows that a 15mm-thick UHPC panel can achieve the decorative effect of a 30mm-thick granite panel while weighing only one-third as much; for large artistic shapes, the weight reduction ratio is even more significant. In the large public art sculpture project at the Shanghai Astronomy Museum, a 3-meter-tall sculptural piece made of UHPC weighs less than half of a traditional concrete sculpture of the same volume, greatly facilitating indoor hoisting and installation.
Breakthroughs in material performance are the fundamental reason for achieving lightweight construction. With its ultra-high compressive strength (≥150MPa) and flexural strength (≥20MPa), UHPC allows components to substantially reduce cross-sectional thickness while meeting the same mechanical performance requirements. To ensure stiffness and strength, traditional concrete or GRC components typically require a thickness of 25-30mm, whereas UHPC components can usually perform with just 12-20mm, directly reducing weight through material usage. In addition, through design methods such as topology optimization, material can be removed from secondary load-bearing areas to achieve further weight reduction—something difficult to accomplish with traditional brittle materials.
The engineering value brought by weight reduction far exceeds the material itself. 1) Substantially reduced structural loads: in high-rise buildings, long-span structures, or renovation of existing buildings, the dead weight of the exterior wall cladding system directly affects the design of the main structure. The lightweight nature of UHPC can significantly reduce the cross-sectional dimensions of beams, columns, and foundations, saving on main structure costs. 2) Significantly lower transportation and hoisting costs: lighter components mean larger single-shipment volumes, lower hoisting equipment requirements, higher installation efficiency, and optimized overall construction costs. 3) Greatly expanded design freedom: weight reduction makes it possible to realize large cantilevers, extensive openwork, and complex suspended shapes, opening up new horizons for architectural artistic expression.
Quantitative comparison highlights the lightweight advantage. In terms of weight per unit area, a 30mm-thick granite panel weighs approximately 75-80kg/㎡, a 25mm-thick standard GRC panel approximately 50-55kg/㎡, while a 15mm-thick UHPC panel requires only 30-35kg/㎡. For large components, the absolute value of weight reduction is even more considerable. In the Yirui Biotechnology Building project in Shenzhen, Qinglong's adoption of a UHPC curtain wall system reduced the building's permanent load by hundreds of tons compared to the originally designed stone curtain wall, delivering both economic and safety benefits.
