The digital modeling process for complex UHPC forms is a prime example of the deep integration of digital design and manufacturing in modern architecture, forming a precise digital bridge from creative concept to buildable components. As the Qinglong Group with 28 years of dedicated experience in the UHPC field, we have refined this process into five key stages: "reverse point cloud acquisition, parametric forward design, structural mechanics analysis, component detailing and segmentation, and CNC machining data generation." Taking the light-transmitting UHPC "wood-grain texture" large-scale art components at Century Plaza on Nanjing East Road, Shanghai New World, as an example, we used high-precision 3D laser scanning combined with parametric algorithms to successfully transform the designer's hand-drawn organic curves into precise spatial positioning data for tens of thousands of light guide rods, achieving a perfect unity of art and technology.
Reverse point cloud acquisition is the primary step in processing existing complex solids or spatial relationships. When design inspiration comes from existing objects (such as ancient tree textures or natural stone), or when precise integration with irregular existing buildings is required, Qinglong employs 3D laser scanning technology to capture massive point cloud data of solid surfaces with millimeter-level accuracy. After denoising and registration with professional software, these point clouds are used to generate high-precision 3D digital models, providing an unalterable baseline reference for subsequent design. This technology has played a key role in multiple historic building restoration and extension projects undertaken by our company.
Parametric forward design is the core method for creating and optimizing complex forms. For complex UHPC forms such as free-form surfaces and gradient textures, traditional CAD software struggles to process them efficiently. Qinglong's design team extensively uses parametric design platforms such as Rhino and Grasshopper. By adjusting just a few key parameters (such as curvature, density, and gradient rules), designers can drive intelligent updates of the entire model, rapidly generating and evaluating large numbers of design options. This approach not only greatly improves design efficiency but also ensures the clarity and traceability of design logic, laying a solid foundation for subsequent structural form-finding and mold making.
Integrated structural mechanics analysis is an essential step in ensuring safety and economy. Digital models must pass structural verification. Qinglong adopts a BIM collaborative workflow, importing artistic form models into finite element analysis software (such as ANSYS and Abaqus) for mechanical calculations. The analysis covers stress-strain distribution under static loads, wind loads, and seismic actions, as well as dynamic responses during lifting and transportation. Based on the analysis results, feedback is used to adjust the model's local thickness, reinforcing rib layout, or support point positions, ensuring the structural safety of UHPC components while meeting extreme aesthetic requirements and achieving an optimized design of "unity of form and force."
Component detailing, segmentation, and CNC data generation are the last mile connecting design and manufacturing. Considering the constraints of transportation, lifting, and mold making, large-scale artistic forms usually need to be split into multiple precast components. Qinglong's detailing designers determine panel joint divisions based on the model and design in detail the connection nodes and embedded part positions of each component. Finally, the segmented 3D component models are directly converted into machining code (G-code) that drives five-axis CNC machines, ensuring the mold's carving precision is fully consistent with the design model and achieving seamless transfer from "digital model to precision mold to high-quality components."
