Improving the wear resistance of GRC panels is essential for applications in high-traffic areas such as flooring, stair treads, and wall corner guards, and it must be achieved through combined approaches including "optimizing the matrix material, enhancing surface hardness, improving the curing process, and applying surface coatings." Through systematic research, Qinglong Group controls the wear groove length of premium GRC (tested by the ball bearing method) to below 25mm, far superior to ordinary concrete, meeting the durability requirements of most public venues.
Wear resistance depends primarily on the hardness and density of the GRC matrix. Qinglong takes the following measures: 1) Selecting high-strength cement and well-graded hard aggregates, such as quartz sand, which has high Mohs hardness and good wear resistance. 2) Reducing the water-binder ratio to improve density: GRC with a low water-binder ratio (<0.3) has low porosity, and its surface is less prone to sanding and spalling. 3) Adding mineral admixtures: silica fume, microbeads, and the like can fill micropores, making the matrix denser, while participating in reactions to form higher-strength C-S-H gel. 4) Ensuring good fiber distribution: uniformly distributed glass fibers can effectively prevent the propagation of wear cracks.
Special treatment of the GRC surface layer can greatly improve wear resistance: 1) Surface hardeners: after troweling or demolding, apply cement-based penetrating crystalline or silicate hardeners by brushing or spraying; they react with cement components to increase surface hardness. 2) Aggregate exposure treatment: through retarded setting, water washing, acid etching, or grinding processes, the surface cement paste is removed to expose hard aggregate particles, forming a natural wear-resistant surface layer. 3) Surface troweling process: around the initial setting of GRC, a power trowel is used to compact and polish the surface multiple times, forming a dense, smooth surface layer.
Adequate moist curing ensures full hydration of the cement, generating more wear-resistant hydration products. Early curing in particular prevents rapid surface water loss that would produce a "powdering" layer. For components with high wear resistance requirements, Qinglong extends the wet curing time and allows a period of natural drying in the later curing stage, so that the surface strength fully develops.
For extreme wear environments (such as workshops and warehouses), specialized coatings can be applied to GRC surfaces: 1) Epoxy resin or polyurethane floor paint: forms a strong polymer protective film that is wear-resistant and impact-resistant. 2) Cement-based self-leveling mortar overlay: provides a uniform, high-strength wear-resistant layer. When selecting a coating, its bonding strength with the GRC substrate and its durability must be considered. Through the above comprehensive measures, the wear resistance of GRC can meet the vast majority of demanding application scenarios.
