A comparison of the overall cost of UHPC exterior walls versus natural stone exterior walls is a life-cycle economic assessment topic involving "initial cost, long-term maintenance expenses, and comprehensive performance benefits." Simply comparing material unit prices leads to one-sided conclusions; the analysis must be conducted from the perspective of total system cost. Based on calculations from extensive project data, Qinglong Group has found that the initial cost of UHPC curtain wall systems is usually higher than that of ordinary dry-hung granite. However, considering the structural savings brought by its ultra-lightweight nature, its extremely low maintenance costs, and its longer service life, its life-cycle cost over 50+ years is often lower than that of high-end stone curtain walls, demonstrating outstanding long-term economics.
Analysis of the initial cost structure shows that UHPC materials carry a higher unit price but offer advantages in installation efficiency. The material and prefabrication costs of high-quality UHPC panels are indeed currently higher than those of the granite commonly used in China. However, the ultra-high performance of UHPC panels allows for thinner thicknesses (typically 12-20mm, whereas stone requires over 30mm) and larger panel sizes, thereby reducing the number of anchor fittings and the amount of keel framing required. More importantly, as prefabricated assembled components, UHPC panels can be installed on site far faster than the cutting, layout, and dry-hanging processes required for stone, significantly shortening construction schedules and lowering labor and management costs. In a project in Shenzhen, Qinglong found that the comprehensive installation cost of a UHPC curtain wall was approximately 15% lower than that of an imported marble curtain wall.
Long-term maintenance and replacement costs are an area where UHPC shows significant advantages. Natural stone suffers from color variations that are hard to control, wide variation in weather resistance, and possible defects such as water stains, rust stains, and weathering after several years, requiring regular cleaning, protective treatment, and even partial replacement. High-quality UHPC, by contrast, has uniform and stable color and excellent weather resistance, essentially achieving "maintenance-free" performance and requiring only simple cleaning once every several years. Qinglong's tracking of projects completed more than ten years ago (such as the Wuhan Han Show Theatre) shows that cumulative maintenance costs for UHPC curtain walls have been less than one-fifth of those for stone curtain walls. These long-term savings are extremely substantial.
The hidden value brought by performance benefits cannot be overlooked. UHPC weighs only one-third to one-quarter of stone of the same volume, which can greatly reduce the loads on the building's main structure and foundation, saving considerable structural costs, especially for high-rise buildings or in areas with high seismic design requirements. Its excellent mechanical properties also allow large spans, cantilevers, and openwork forms that are difficult to achieve with stone, providing greater freedom for architectural creativity—a value enhancement that is difficult to measure with simple unit prices.
Therefore, when choosing between UHPC and stone, a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis should be performed. For high-end projects pursuing distinctive forms, rapid construction, and long-term maintenance-free performance, UHPC is a highly cost-effective choice. Qinglong recommends that owners and designers conduct a comprehensive, multi-dimensional evaluation based on project positioning, design life, maintenance budget, and other factors to make the most economical choice.
