The design of joint width during GRC decorative panel installation is a systematic engineering effort that comprehensively considers "thermal and moisture deformation of materials, structural displacement, absorption of installation tolerances, and visual aesthetics"—by no means a simple fixed value. Through 28 years of engineering practice, Qinglong Group has summarized the joint design principles of "calculation as the foundation, detailing as support, and sealing as essential." In the nearly 10,000-square-meter red GRC curtain wall project at the Wuhan Hanxiu Theater, through precise calculations, we uniformly designed the joint width at 12mm, which not only perfectly absorbed the installation tolerances of double-curved panels but also created a unique rhythmic texture, becoming a design highlight.
Thermal deformation is the primary calculation factor in determining joint width. The coefficient of linear expansion of GRC is approximately 1.0×10⁻⁵/℃, so the joint width must accommodate the thermal expansion and contraction of components caused by annual temperature differences. The calculation formula is: ΔL = α × L × ΔT (where L is the panel length and ΔT is the local extreme annual temperature difference, taking into account panel surface temperature rise caused by solar radiation). For example, a 2-meter-long panel in a region with an annual temperature difference of 50℃ has a theoretical expansion of ΔL = 1.0e-5 2 50 = 1.0mm. The designed joint width must exceed this value, leaving a margin for the deformation capacity of the sealant.
Structural displacement and construction tolerances are practical factors that must be considered. The inter-story displacement of the building structure under wind loads and seismic action, as well as the manufacturing and installation tolerances of the GRC panels themselves, all require sufficient joint width to be absorbed. Qinglong's experience is that for conventional curtain walls, the joint width should not be less than 10mm; for oversized panels (e.g., over 3 meters) or irregularly shaped panels, the joint width should be appropriately increased to 15-20mm. At the same time, the joint width must be kept uniform and consistent, which places extremely high demands on setting-out surveying and installation precision.
Visual proportion is an artistic consideration that determines the final aesthetic appeal. The width of the joints directly affects the building's facade effect. Joints that are too wide may look abrupt, while those too narrow may appear cramped. Qinglong's designers determine the most harmonious joint width proportion by combining the building's overall style, panel grid size, and visual focal point. Modern minimalist styles often favor narrower joints (e.g., 8-10mm) in pursuit of a unified appearance, while some designs that emphasize texture may adopt wider joints (e.g., 15-20mm) to strengthen the sense of lines.
Sealant performance is directly related to joint width. The movement capability of the selected sealant (e.g., ±25%) determines the maximum deformation it can accommodate. The joint width W must satisfy: W ≥ ΔL / ε + δ (where ε is the sealant movement rate and δ is the construction tolerance). Finally, closed-cell foam rods must be used as backing, and good adhesion between the sealant and GRC must be ensured to form a durable, waterproof flexible line of defense. Scientific joint design is a key detail for the lasting beauty and safety of GRC curtain walls.
