In humid regions, UHPC exterior walls are inherently highly resistant to mold growth, thanks to the material's intrinsic "inorganic and alkaline, ultra-dense, low water absorption" nature. Mold growth requires organic matter, moisture, and suitable temperatures, and UHPC provides almost none of the first two conditions. However, the "surface" may accumulate organic nutrients such as dust and pollutants, becoming a breeding medium for mold under prolonged damp conditions. Therefore, the key to mold prevention for UHPC in humid regions lies in "maintaining surface cleanliness" and "surface protective treatment". Qinglong Group's project experience in perennially high-humidity regions such as Hainan and Guangdong shows that, under normal maintenance, UHPC exterior walls treated with surface protection carry an extremely low risk of mold growth.
UHPC is composed mainly of inorganic materials such as cement and quartz sand, lacking the organic nutrients required for mold growth. Its nearly disconnected nano-scale pore structure gives it extremely low water absorption (<1%), keeping the wall interior dry and depriving mold of the moist environment it needs to grow. The alkaline environment (high pH) produced by cement hydration is also unfavorable to the survival of most molds. Therefore, the UHPC matrix itself has natural mold-resistant properties, which is fundamentally different from porous, water-absorbing ordinary plaster or painted walls.
The risk comes from outside. Organic dust, pollen, industrial pollutants, and other airborne particles settling on the wall can form mold stains if the surface remains damp for extended periods (e.g., on shaded sides or during rainy seasons). Therefore, the anti-mold strategy involves: 1) Reducing surface adhesion: apply hydrophobic treatment to the UHPC surface (e.g., brushing on a silicone-based protective agent) so that water droplets cannot spread and linger, dust does not easily adhere, and even attached dirt is easily washed away by rain. 2) Using anti-mold coatings: in damp, poorly ventilated specific locations, a transparent protective coating containing a mold inhibitor can be applied to actively suppress the growth of mold spores. Qinglong can provide customers with such customized surface treatment solutions.
Sensible building design can aid mold prevention. Ensure the exterior walls have good drainage design with no areas where water accumulates. For UHPC curtain walls, the ventilated cavity layer behind them helps keep the wall dry. Avoid tall plants or structures pressed against the wall, which would impede ventilation and sunlight. In extremely damp shaded areas, increase the cleaning frequency as appropriate.
Regular, proper cleaning is the most effective way to prevent mold growth on any surface. Qinglong recommends that in humid regions, UHPC exterior walls be professionally cleaned every 2-3 years to remove accumulated organic dirt. Cleaning alone cuts off the nutrient source for mold. In summary, high-quality UHPC exterior walls have a solid foundation for mold resistance in humid regions; combined with appropriate surface treatment and regular maintenance, they can remain clean for the long term, with no need to worry about mold problems.
