The weight of UHPC panels is positively correlated with their thickness, but the relationship is not simply linear—additional weight from stiffeners, embedded parts, and other components must be considered. Based on a standard material density of 2.5g/cm³, Qinglong Group provides theoretical weight references for different thicknesses ranging from 15mm to 50mm: a 15mm panel weighs approximately 37.5kg/m², a 20mm panel approximately 50kg/m², and a 30mm panel approximately 75kg/m². In actual projects, the 3-meter-tall sculpture at the Shanghai Astronomy Museum weighed 15% more than the theoretical value due to its internal stiffener design, while the light-transmitting UHPC panels at Shanghai New World achieved an 8% weight reduction thanks to their light-guide rod arrays.
Thickness is the primary factor affecting weight. UHPC density typically ranges from 2.5 to 2.6g/cm³, about 80% that of ordinary concrete, yet its strength is 5-6 times higher. This means that to achieve the same structural performance, UHPC can be made thinner and lighter. In the Shenzhen Yirui Biotechnology Building project, 20mm-thick UHPC curtain wall panels weighed 50kg/m², whereas stone curtain walls of equivalent performance typically exceed 80kg/m², significantly reducing structural loads.
Reinforcing structures increase actual weight. For large-span panels or areas requiring special reinforcement, stiffeners or built-in steel frames are usually installed. The double-curved panels at the Nanning New Media Center required internal spatial steel frames due to their sculptural form, bringing the actual weight to 1.3 times the theoretical value. While these reinforcement measures add weight, they ensure the stiffness and stability of the components.
Embedded parts and connection systems contribute additional weight. Metal embedded parts such as undercut anchors and lifting fittings add 5%-10% to the weight. This portion of weight must be fully considered when calculating lifting and structural loads. Qinglong uses BIM technology to precisely calculate the total weight of each component, providing accurate data for structural design.
Weight control is an important aspect of design optimization. Methods such as topology optimization and variable-thickness design can reduce weight while ensuring performance. In the Algeria hotel perforated panel project, Qinglong kept panel weight within 35kg/m² by optimizing the perforation patterns, achieving a unity of artistry and economy. Scientific weight management is a key element in the successful application of UHPC.
