The UV (ultraviolet) aging resistance of outdoor UHPC panels is exceptional, stemming from the inorganic nature of its materials and its dense, stable microstructure. Ultraviolet light mainly destroys the chemical bonds of organic materials, while its direct effect on cement-based inorganic materials is minimal. Therefore, the color and strength of the UHPC substrate itself hardly degrade under long-term UV exposure. However, the long-term preservation of its surface effects (especially colored or stone-imitation finishes) is closely related to the coloring process and the surface protective layer. Follow-up inspections by Qinglong Group on the roof of the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center (ten years) and the red curtain wall of the Wuhan Han Show Theatre (ten years) showed no loss of strength in the UHPC matrix, and the change in surface color difference (ΔE) was far below the perceptible range, fully verifying its outstanding weather resistance.
The main components of UHPC are cement, silica fume, quartz sand, and steel fibers—all inorganic materials whose chemical bond energies far exceed the energy of UV photons. Therefore, ultraviolet light cannot destroy its internal structure the way it decomposes organic coatings. Long-term outdoor exposure has no effect on the core mechanical properties of UHPC, such as compressive and flexural strength. This is its fundamental advantage over organic finish materials such as coatings and real-stone paint that require periodic renovation and maintenance. The durability challenges of UHPC mainly come from physical and chemical attack by water, chloride ions, and the like—not from ultraviolet light.
For colored UHPC, the effect of ultraviolet light is mainly reflected in the potential damage to pigment molecules. The coloring technology adopted by Qinglong is “through-body coloring,” in which highly weather-resistant inorganic pigments (such as the iron oxide series) are uniformly incorporated into the entire matrix during mixing. These inorganic pigments themselves have extremely strong UV resistance. More importantly, they are encapsulated and protected by the dense UHPC matrix, avoiding direct contact with ultraviolet light and pollutants. This is fundamentally different from surface spray coating, where the pigments are exposed on the outermost layer. Therefore, the fading risk of colored UHPC is extremely low.
Although the UHPC substrate itself needs no protection, protective agents are often applied to the surface to improve self-cleaning, stain resistance, and further color retention. 1) Penetrating protective agents (such as silicone/silane types): they penetrate into the surface micropores and form a hydrophobic layer without changing the surface texture, and they themselves have good UV aging resistance. 2) Film-forming protective agents (such as fluorocarbon clear coatings): they form an extremely thin protective film on the surface, providing stronger stain resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, and UV protection, and are particularly suitable for heavily polluted industrial areas or projects with extremely high color fidelity requirements. This protective film itself must have high weather resistance, and its service life (typically 10–15 years) determines the recoating cycle.
Theory requires field evidence. Qinglong has established long-term performance monitoring records for completed projects, conducts regular follow-up visits, and measures indicators such as color, gloss, and water absorption with instruments. For projects in extreme environments such as coastal areas and high plateaus with intense UV radiation, we set up monitoring specimens in different orientations to collect data. All evidence shows that in outdoor environments, high-quality UHPC’s ability to retain its appearance and performance far exceeds that of the vast majority of exterior building finishing materials, making it an ideal choice for achieving “maintenance-free” or “low-maintenance” buildings.
Therefore, the UV aging resistance of outdoor UHPC panels is one of its core advantages as a permanent building envelope. Choosing Qinglong UHPC means choosing a reliable commitment for the building—one that retains its appearance through decades of sunshine.
