UHPC panels, with their exceptional hardness and wear resistance, place demanding requirements on cutting tools. Ordinary saw blades for cutting stone or concrete are not up to the task—not only are they inefficient and wear out extremely fast, but they also risk chipped cut edges, micro-cracks in the material, and even blade breakage. Through extensive practice in production and on-site construction, Qinglong Group has established that "diamond cutting blades" must be used, with strict requirements for their type, specifications, and operating procedures. When modifying panels on site at the Shenzhen Yirui Biotechnology Building project, we used a specialized dry-cut diamond saw blade and achieved perfectly flat, chip-free cuts.
Diamond is the only superhard material that can effectively cut UHPC. Blade selection is critical: 1) Diamond quality and concentration: high-quality, high-strength diamond grit must be used, at a relatively high concentration (i.e., diamond content) to withstand the strong abrasiveness of UHPC. 2) Segment bond: a metal bond with good heat resistance and moderate hardness is recommended, such as a cobalt-based bond or one reinforced with rare-earth elements. Soft bonds wear away too quickly, while hard bonds may cause the diamond grit to shed before being fully used. 3) Blade structure: use laser-welded narrow-slot segments with pressure-relief grooves to reduce cutting resistance and heat buildup.
Choose dry or wet cutting according to site conditions: 1) Wet cutting: the preferred method. A continuous water supply cools the blade and the cut, greatly reducing dust, lowering cutting temperature, extending blade life, and producing a smoother cut surface. Blades specifically designed for wet cutting must be used. 2) Dry cutting: suitable for small quantities, small-sized cuts, or situations where water cannot be supplied. Blades specifically designed for dry cutting must be used, with heat-dissipation grooves in the segments, and cutting must be performed intermittently and progressively to prevent overheating. In either case, operators must wear full protective equipment (safety goggles, dust masks, earplugs).
1) Diameter and thickness: selected according to cutting depth and machine; common diameters are 300-400mm. The blade core must be flat with minimal runout. 2) Cutting speed: linear speed is the key, usually controlled at 30-40 m/s. Too high a rotation speed easily burns the blade, while too low a speed is inefficient. 3) Feed rate: must be steady and uniform; never press down forcefully. Let the blade cut under its own weight and rotation—excessive pressure causes overheating and chipped edges. 4) Securing: the UHPC panel being cut must be firmly clamped with its underside propped up, to prevent chipping and cracking at the end of the cut.
Cutting UHPC requires high-power, highly stable professional cutting machines (such as marble cutters or converted bridge saws). Operators must be trained and familiar with the properties of UHPC. At Qinglong's processing center, we use CNC bridge saws equipped with circulating water cooling systems, achieving high-precision, high-quality automated cutting. Even minor on-site modifications must be performed by workers who have received proper instruction.
In short, cutting UHPC is a specialized technical task. Wrong choices and improper operation can damage expensive material and create safety risks. Qinglong Group recommends completing all cutting in the factory wherever possible; if on-site cutting is unavoidable, be sure to use the correct tools and follow safety procedures, or entrust the work to a professional team.
