The strength of GRC (Glass Fibre Reinforced Cement) is a key performance indicator for its use as an architectural decoration and structural material, mainly reflected in three aspects: flexural strength, impact strength, and compressive strength. As the Qinglong Group with 28 years of R&D and application experience in the GRC field, we have set the internal control standard for the flexural strength of premium GRC at ≥12MPa based on extensive experiments and engineering practice; the impact strength (free-fall impact of a 1kg steel ball from a height of 1m) is required to show no through cracks; and the compressive strength can reach 40-60MPa. In the Shenzhen Yirui Biotechnology Building project, the GRC hollowed-out artistic ceiling panels we supplied achieved a measured flexural strength of 15.8MPa, successfully realizing an artistic effect of large panel size and high hollow-out ratio, with safe load-bearing capacity far exceeding design expectations. The strength of GRC derives from the synergy between the cement matrix and three-dimensionally randomly distributed glass fibres, giving it both high load-bearing capacity and excellent toughness.
The flexural strength of GRC is typically 8-20MPa, 5-10 times that of ordinary cement mortar, enabling the production of thin-walled, large-span components. Qinglong Group ensures uniform fibre distribution by optimizing the mix ratio (using low-alkali cement and high-zirconia alkali-resistant glass fibres) and advanced spraying processes, keeping the flexural strength stable above 12MPa. For example, in the cornice line project of Nanning Wuxiang China Resources MixC, GRC components with a thickness of 15mm achieved a cantilever length of 1.2 meters, fully meeting structural safety requirements. High flexural strength allows GRC to achieve a lightweight visual effect while ensuring sufficient mechanical performance in applications such as facade decoration and roofing components.
Unlike the brittleness of ordinary concrete, GRC possesses good toughness thanks to the bridging effect of fibres. When subjected to impact, its failure mode is multi-crack opening rather than pulverized failure. Qinglong GRC undergoes ball-drop impact testing in accordance with standards: after impact by a 1kg steel ball from a height of 1 meter, no fragments spall off the back of the component, leaving only radial micro-cracks. This characteristic provides higher safety when applied in areas with dense human activity or at locations that may suffer accidental impact (such as corridor column cladding and campus walls).
Although GRC is rarely used for purely compressive load-bearing members, its 40-60MPa compressive strength is sufficient to handle its own load and conventional external pressure. In the Wuhan Han Show Theatre project, complex irregular GRC curtain wall panels demonstrated excellent overall stability when bearing wind loads and self-weight. Through strict control of matrix compactness, Qinglong ensures that the compressive strength meets the bearing requirements of various installation connection joints.
In summary, GRC offers significant advantages in the field of non-load-bearing building components thanks to its excellent flexural and impact strength. With high-standard material control and extensive engineering application experience, Qinglong Group ensures that every GRC product delivers reliable structural performance.
