The frost resistance of UHPC is a key performance indicator for its application in severe cold regions (minimum temperature ≤ -20°C), referring to its ability to withstand freeze-thaw cycle damage in a water-saturated state. High-quality UHPC can achieve a frost resistance grade of F300 or above (i.e., performance still meets standards after 300 freeze-thaw cycles), far exceeding ordinary concrete (typically F50-F100). Through maximum-density mix design, air-entraining agent control, and strict curing, Qinglong Group ensures that after 300 rapid freeze-thaw cycles, UHPC shows a mass loss rate <0.5% and a relative dynamic elastic modulus retention rate >95%. In severe cold region projects such as the Harbin Grand Theatre and the Shenyang Culture and Art Center, our UHPC components have endured 15 harsh winters with no surface spalling and no loss of strength. Frost resistance is UHPC's passport to conquering the world of ice and snow.
The mechanism of freeze-thaw damage is that water expands 9% in volume when it freezes, generating enormous internal stress. UHPC's low porosity (<5%) and low water absorption (<6%) mean the content of freezable water is extremely low, fundamentally reducing the source of frost heave. Meanwhile, its high strength is sufficient to resist the remaining frost heave stress. This is the physical basis for its frost resistance being far superior to ordinary concrete.
Under strict control, air-entraining agents introduce an appropriate amount (4-6% by volume) of uniform, sealed micro-bubbles (pore diameter 0.05-0.2mm) into UHPC. These bubbles act as "pressure buffer valves", providing space for water expansion during freezing and releasing stress. Through advanced processes, Qinglong Group ensures a bubble spacing factor ≤200μm, forming a highly efficient protection system.
In a highway bridge project in Inner Mongolia, the UHPC bridge deck panels we supplied have been in service for 5 years in a -30°C environment with no signs of frost damage. In the repair of an energy dissipation sill at a water conservancy hub in Jilin, UHPC demonstrated outstanding frost resistance and wear resistance. These cases prove its reliability in the harshest environments.
Therefore, for infrastructure construction in cold regions, UHPC is the preferred option for long service life and low maintenance. Qinglong Group infuses your projects with the genes to withstand extreme cold.
