New GRC materials, such as translucent GRC, self-cleaning GRC, and high-toughness ECC (Engineered Cementitious Composites), are continually breaking through the performance boundaries of traditional materials. Their application prospects are built upon four major trends: functional integration, intelligent performance, efficient construction, and environmental friendliness. Taking translucent GRC as an example, the UHPC wood-grain translucent panels successfully applied by Qinglong Group in the Century Plaza renovation project on Nanjing East Road in Shanghai achieve, through the embedding of tens of thousands of light-guide rods, a perfect combination of rustic concrete texture by day and soft light transmission at night, endowing the building facade with dynamic artistic expressiveness. Such new GRC materials are expected to open up broad markets in fields such as architectural night lighting, interior space partitions, energy-saving daylighting ceilings, and art installations. Innovation is the eternal driving force of industry development.
By incorporating light-guide fibers or using special aggregates, the originally heavy concrete takes on a translucent quality. It is not merely a decorative material but has become a new type of "building skin" capable of regulating the indoor light environment and creating unique light-and-shadow artistic effects. In the future, it holds great potential in venues requiring atmosphere creation, such as museums, commercial centers, and high-end hotels. The challenge lies in balancing light transmittance with mechanical performance while controlling costs.
By embedding microcapsules containing healing agents or applying photocatalytic coatings, GRC can automatically heal when micro-cracks form, or use rainwater to automatically clean its surface. Such "smart" materials can significantly reduce long-term maintenance costs and are particularly suitable for hard-to-maintain areas such as high-rise buildings and irregularly shaped roofs, making them one of the key technologies for future ultra-long-life buildings.
Through fiber optimization, the ultimate tensile strain capacity of GRC is greatly enhanced (reaching 3-5%), exhibiting a distinct "strain-hardening" characteristic, i.e., multiple cracking without fracture. This material can be used in seismic-resistant structures, structural reinforcement, thin-shell roofs, and more, blurring the boundary between decoration and structure and achieving "decorative-structural integration."
Using industrial waste (such as fly ash and slag) to replace part of the cement, developing low-energy manufacturing processes, and producing GRC with carbon sequestration capabilities are important directions for the future. This not only lowers production costs but also significantly reduces the carbon footprint, in line with the global trend of green building development.
The research, development, and application of new GRC materials represent the crystallization of the integration of materials science, architectural art, and digital technology. Qinglong Group will continue to invest in R&D, working together with designers and owners to explore future possibilities for building skins and drive the industry toward higher performance, greater functionality, and greater sustainability.
