GRC panels with different curvatures require significantly different connection methods, and must be individually designed based on four key factors: "curvature type, panel thickness variation, load-bearing characteristics, and thermal deformation". Through long-term practice, Qinglong Group has summarized the following connection design principles: single-curvature panels use "linear sliding connections", allowing thermal expansion and contraction along the curved surface direction; double-curvature panels require "universal hinged connections" to accommodate multi-directional deformation; while junctions between panels of different curvatures require "deformation buffer zones". In the Nanning New Media Center project, we designed 12 specialized connection nodes for 287 GRC panels with varying curvatures, successfully handling the deformation stress caused by an annual temperature range of 50℃. Connection is a poetry of movement, requiring both precise mechanics and tolerant wisdom.
The thermal deformation of single-curvature panels (cylindrical and conical surfaces) occurs mainly along the generatrix direction. We adopt a "slotted hole + elastic washer" connection method, allowing panels to slide freely (±10mm) along the curved surface direction while remaining constrained in the normal direction. The single-curvature panels on the roof of the Hainan Convention and Exhibition Center use this connection and have withstood ten years of temperature variations without any damage.
Double-curvature panels undergo complex spatial deformation under temperature changes. We developed a spherical hinge connector that can rotate freely within a certain angle (±5°), releasing multi-directional thermal stress. Displacement sensors are installed at connection points to monitor deformation in real time. The double-curvature panels at the Wuhan Han Show Theatre use this technology, achieving a 3-fold increase in displacement absorption capacity.
At junctions between panels of different curvatures, stress concentration is significant. We buffer deformation differences by installing flexible joints (20-30mm wide) and using high-elasticity sealant (movement capability ±50%). Carbon fiber fabric is applied to the back of panels for local reinforcement to prevent cracking.
Virtual pre-assembly is carried out through BIM technology to identify connection conflicts in advance. Adopting the concept of "tolerance design", inevitable manufacturing and installation errors are reasonably distributed to each connection node and absorbed by adjustable connectors. This system achieved a 99.8% first-pass installation qualification rate for nearly 10,000 panels in the Shenzhen Yirui project.
Connection design is a balancing art between structural safety and architectural aesthetics. Through precise calculations and extensive experience, Qinglong Group finds the most suitable "handshake" for every curvature.
