The core reason why free-form GRC panels cannot use traditional wooden molds lies in four technical bottlenecks: "insufficient precision, poor stability, low efficiency, and missing details." Traditional wooden molds rely on handcrafting; their precision is typically limited to the ±5mm level, and they are prone to deformation under temperature and humidity fluctuations, failing to meet modern architecture's demands for millimeter-level precision on complex curved surfaces. In the red double-curved curtain wall project of the Wuhan Han Show Theatre, Qinglong Group adopted high-precision resin molds machined by five-axis CNC, controlling the surface profile errors of 287 shaped panels within ±0.5mm; with wooden molds, cumulative errors would have made the joints impossible to align. High-precision molds are the key bridge that turns curved GRC from concept into reality.
Free-form GRC panels are typically used on landmark buildings, which place extremely high demands on joint precision and surface smoothness. Wooden molds, constrained by the properties of wood and manual fabrication methods, cannot achieve high-precision translation of digital models. We use CNC-machined steel or resin molds, verified with coordinate measuring machines, to ensure the mold surface profile matches the design model exactly, guaranteeing forming precision at the source.
Wooden molds are prone to wear and deformation during repeated use, causing dimensional fluctuations between batches of components. Qinglong Group uses high-strength resin or steel for its molds, which last over 1,000 uses with deformation below 0.1mm, ensuring that thousands of components in large-scale production still fit together seamlessly. In the Hainan Convention and Exhibition Center project, 12,000 roof panels produced from the same mold maintained a stable error within ±1mm.
Traditional wooden molds take a long time to make and are difficult to modify. For complex shapes such as double curves and inverted curves, wooden molds are nearly impossible to fabricate. We use five-axis CNC digital manufacturing for molds, reducing the fabrication cycle for complex curved molds to 7-10 days while supporting rapid modifications. In the "Flowing Cloud" facade project of the Nanning New Media Center, molds for 38 types of double-curved panels with different curvatures were all completed within two weeks.
Curved GRC for high-end projects often needs to express fine textures or sharp edges. Wooden molds cannot accurately replicate detail features smaller than 2mm. We use a silicone overlay molding process that can perfectly transfer fine features such as stone grain and woven textures. The aluminum-panel-textured boards in the Shenzhen Yirui Biotechnology Building project achieved 0.2mm-level detail reproduction through high-precision molds.
Advances in mold technology are the core driving force behind the development of GRC curved surfaces. Through continuous investment in digital manufacturing equipment and process R&D, Qinglong Group enables even the most complex architectural curves to be accurately rendered in physical form.
