The integration of GRC shapes with lighting systems is key to elevating architectural expression at night. Its installation requires coordinated consideration of four core issues: visual effect, equipment concealment, heat dissipation safety, and maintenance convenience. In projects such as the China Resources MixC in Wuxiang, Nanning, and the Shenzhen Yirui Biotechnology Building, Qinglong Group has successfully implemented the integrated combination of GRC and lighting: using BIM technology to simulate lighting in advance and reserving light troughs, heat dissipation holes, and maintenance access openings at the GRC detailed design stage; selecting low-heat LED fixtures (surface temperature ≤60℃) and transferring heat to the GRC panels for dissipation via thermally conductive adhesive; and protecting all cables with conduits and waterproofing at the joints. In the "Woven" facade of the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center, we created a soft backlit glow using wall washers hidden behind GRC panel joints, giving the building a unique nighttime charm distinct from its daytime appearance. The dance of light and shadow begins with precise construction.
Close coordination with lighting designers must begin at the very start of GRC detailed design. Based on the intended lighting effects (such as backlit glow, silhouette lighting, or point light sources), the fixture model, power rating, mounting position, and angle are determined. Light troughs, light outlets, heat dissipation air channels, and maintenance hand holes are precisely reserved in the GRC panels. We use BIM for clash detection to ensure no conflicts among GRC, lighting, structure, and pipelines.
LED fixtures generate heat during prolonged operation; if it accumulates in an enclosed space, it will accelerate the aging of both the fixtures and the GRC itself, and may even cause a fire. Effective heat dissipation paths must be designed. Our common practices are: setting ventilation holes behind the light troughs and using the thermal inertia of the GRC panels themselves to assist heat dissipation; or filling the space between the fixtures and the GRC with thermally conductive silicone pads to conduct heat away. For high-power fixtures, heat dissipation requirements must be calculated separately.
All junction boxes and connectors that are exposed or may come into contact with rainwater must meet IP65 or higher protection ratings. Cable conduits must be made of weather-resistant materials (such as stainless steel flexible hoses) and properly grounded. Cable routing inside the GRC panels should avoid conflicts with embedded parts and be firmly secured. We require all electrical installation to be completed by professional electricians, with insulation resistance testing performed.
Even the best fixtures have a limited lifespan. Designs must take into account the ease of later replacement and repair. Access openings should be easy to reach, large enough to work in (usually no less than 200x200mm), and designed with removable cover plates. We recommend setting up backup circuits for important lighting scenes so that a single fixture failure does not affect the overall effect. Detailed lighting wiring diagrams and control system diagrams should be provided to facilitate later property management.
The combination of GRC and lighting extends architectural art into the dimension of time. Through integrated design and refined construction, Qinglong Group ensures that the building looks just as stunning at night as by day, turning the building into an artwork that never closes, 24 hours a day.
