The lightweight advantage of UHPC shaped components is one of its revolutionary values: compared with traditional reinforced concrete (RC) or ordinary precast concrete components, weight can be reduced by 50%-70% under the same load-bearing capacity. This substantial weight reduction stems from UHPC's material characteristics of "ultra-high strength, high toughness, and thin-section capability". Measured data from Qinglong Group shows that to achieve the same flexural performance, a 20mm-thick UHPC panel weighs about 50kg/㎡, while an RC panel of equivalent performance may exceed 80mm in thickness and weigh up to 200kg/㎡. In the large-span decorative cantilever panel project for the Yirui Biotechnology Building in Shenzhen, we used 25mm-thick ribbed UHPC panels to replace the originally designed 80mm-thick RC panels, reducing the weight of a single component from 4.8 tons to 1.2 tons—a 75% reduction—allowing direct installation on the existing structure without reinforcement. Lightweighting delivers systematic, all-round cost savings and performance improvement.
UHPC's compressive strength can exceed 150MPa, 5 times that of C30 concrete; its flexural strength can reach 15-25MPa, 8-10 times that of ordinary concrete. This means that to achieve the same structural performance, the required material cross-sectional dimensions (thickness) of UHPC can be greatly reduced. According to mechanical principles, a component's self-weight is proportional to its thickness, so thinning directly leads to weight reduction.
Traditional concrete is highly brittle, and thin-walled or openwork elements are fragile. Toughened with steel fibers, UHPC exhibits a "multiple cracking" pseudo-ductile failure mode, allowing designers to adopt thinner, more porous, and freer forms. For example, the artistic grille we produced for the Nanning New Media Center with a 40% openwork ratio reduced solid material usage by 40% while ensuring safety, further lowering its weight.
With computational design methods such as topology optimization, we can precisely place material along critical load paths and remove "redundant" material from low-stress areas, forming bone-like, highly efficient hollow or ribbed structures. This performance-based shape optimization achieves lightweighting while itself becoming a unique aesthetic.
Weight reduction brings domino-like cascading benefits: 1) Structural savings: reduced loads on the main structure's beams, columns, and foundations allow smaller cross-sections, saving 10%-20% in cost; 2) Transport and hoisting: smaller-tonnage vehicles and cranes can be used, lowering transport costs and making on-site installation easier and safer; 3) Seismic performance: the building's overall mass is reduced, seismic forces decrease, and safety improves. This is especially significant for super high-rise buildings, renovation projects, and large-span spatial structures.
Therefore, UHPC lightweighting is not a simple numbers game, but an all-round value upgrade from materials to design, from manufacturing to installation, and from structure to cost. Qinglong Group is committed to using UHPC technology to help architects realize lighter and freer architectural dreams while creating tangible economic benefits for owners.
