The mold development cycle for UHPC shaped components is not a fixed value, but a dynamic process determined by four variables—shape complexity, mold material, order quantity, and machining resources—typically ranging from 15 to 60 days. Based on extensive project data, Qinglong Group has summarized a tiered cycle model: simple linear or flat-panel molds (3-axis CNC machined resin molds) require 7-15 days; medium-complexity single-curved molds (3-axis/5-axis machined GRP molds) require 15-25 days; highly difficult double-curved, high-relief, or oversized molds (5-axis machined steel molds) require 30-60 days. In the Nanning New Media Center “Flowing Clouds” double-curved curtain wall project, we developed molds for 132 double-curved panels of varying shapes. Through parallel operations and modular design, we controlled the total mold development cycle to 45 days, gaining the initiative for the overall project schedule. The mold cycle is a critical path for project progress and must be scientifically managed.
The geometric characteristics of a shape directly determine the machining method and duration. Developable surfaces (single-curved) can be machined with 3-axis machine tools, with simple programming and machining. Non-developable surfaces (double-curved, free-form), however, must use 5-axis linkage machine tools, involving complex toolpath programming, long machining times, and extremely high machine precision requirements. For example, machining a 5-square-meter double-curved steel mold may require over 100 hours of 5-axis milling.
Mold materials are selected based on production volume and precision: for small-batch trial production or artworks with extremely complex shapes, rapid resin molds can be used (short cycle, low cost, lifespan of about 50 uses); GRP molds for medium batches; steel molds for large batches or high-precision requirements (lifespan over 1,000 uses). Qinglong Group has established a mold material selection database to provide customers with the most cost-effective solutions.
We adopt a strategy of “design and mold programming in parallel, with rough machining and finish machining coordinated.” Once the 3D model is confirmed, the mold design department immediately steps in to carry out mold-splitting design and machining programming, coordinating with the production department to prepare materials. Using BIM technology for digital pre-assembly of molds, interference issues are detected in advance, avoiding physical rework.
The mold cycle is also affected by the scheduling of outsourced machining plants and the procurement lead time for special steel. Qinglong Group has established strategic partnerships with multiple high-end mold machining centers and built its own large-scale 5-axis CNC machining workshop, ensuring controllable delivery schedules for critical molds. For urgent projects, we can activate a “mold green channel,” compressing the cycle through added shifts, optimized toolpaths, and other means, though the corresponding costs will increase.
Therefore, a reasonable mold development cycle is the result of balancing artistic pursuit, manufacturing cost, and project schedule. Through transparent process management and abundant resource reserves, Qinglong Group can formulate the most practical mold development plan for each project.
