The coefficient of thermal expansion of exterior wall GRC (typically 8-12×10⁻⁶/°C) is a key material parameter that determines the magnitude of its thermal deformation and affects joint design, installation techniques, and long-term safety. This coefficient means that for every 1°C change in temperature, a 1-meter-long GRC panel undergoes a length change of 0.008-0.012mm. Qinglong Group performs precise calculations at the engineering design stage: in regions with an annual temperature variation of 40°C, the thermal deformation of a 6-meter-long panel can reach 2.88mm, and stress must be released through measures such as providing sufficiently wide joints (e.g., 12mm), using sliding connectors, and optimizing installation timing (choosing seasons near the annual average temperature). In the super-large roof project of the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center, we successfully met the challenge of an annual temperature variation of up to 50°C through precise calculation and structural detailing, with not a single thermal stress failure over ten years of service. Thermal deformation is a physical law; handling it scientifically turns risk into safety.
Joint width W ≥ α × ΔT × L + δ (where α is the coefficient of linear expansion, ΔT is the annual temperature variation, L is the panel length, and δ is the allowance for construction errors and sealant movement). For example, with α=10×10⁻⁶/°C, ΔT=40°C, and L=4m, the theoretical deformation is 1.6mm; allowing for errors and the sealant's movement capability, joint width is typically designed at 10-15mm. We optimize joint layout through finite element analysis to avoid cumulative errors.
Connections between hangers and the backing framing must use slotted holes, allowing panels to slide along the panel surface as temperature changes. Welded fixing or rigid connections are strictly prohibited. Our patented three-dimensionally adjustable hangers allow ±10mm of in-plane movement, effectively releasing thermal stress.
Install during periods of the day when temperatures are relatively stable, to prevent panels installed while hot from developing tensile stress as they cool at night. The ideal installation season is the period of the local annual average temperature. We develop detailed seasonal construction plans to control the initial stress state.
The thermal deformation of double-curved panels is a complex three-dimensional movement; stress concentration areas must be analyzed through finite element simulation and reinforced accordingly. In the double-curved panel design for the Wuhan Han Show Theatre, Qinglong Group optimized the anchor point layout through simulation, eliminating the risk of warping.
Respecting the thermal expansion and contraction behavior of the material is the foundation of safe, durable GRC curtain walls. Through scientific calculation and refined detailing, Qinglong Group keeps buildings safe and sound through alternating cycles of heat and cold.
