The cost difference between exterior wall GRC and stone curtain walls requires a full life-cycle comparison across four dimensions—initial investment, operation and maintenance, service life, and overall benefits—rather than a simple comparison of material unit prices. Based on extensive project data, Qinglong Group has calculated that GRC curtain wall systems typically have an initial cost of 800–1,500 RMB per square meter, while premium stone curtain walls (e.g., granite) cost 1,200–2,000 RMB per square meter, making GRC's initial cost approximately 20%–40% lower. However, considering that GRC's lightweight properties (only 1/3 the weight of stone) can save 10%–15% on main structure costs, its high installation efficiency (30% shorter construction period), and its low maintenance costs (virtually maintenance-free), the total cost of GRC over a 50-year life cycle can be 25%–35% lower than stone. During the comparison stage of the Shenzhen Pingshan High-tech Zone Comprehensive Service Center (a Luban Award project), our full life-cycle cost analysis showed that although choosing the GRC curtain wall involved a slightly higher initial investment, its overall benefits were significant, and it ultimately became the owner's first choice. The essence of cost comparison is value-based decision-making.
Stone costs are heavily affected by raw block prices and yield rates, and premium stone is expensive. GRC is an industrialized product with stable pricing. In terms of installation, GRC panels are large and lightweight, allowing quick hoisting and lower labor and machinery costs. Our statistics show that the comprehensive installed unit price of GRC curtain walls is typically 15%–25% lower than that of stone.
Stone requires regular cleaning and protective treatment (every 5–8 years), carries a risk of falling, and entails high repair costs. GRC has strong weather resistance and a long-lasting surface protective layer; maintenance mainly involves replacing joint sealant at low cost. We estimate that over 20 years, GRC's maintenance cost is only 1/3 that of stone.
GRC's lightweight nature reduces beam and column cross-sections and foundation dimensions; especially in high-rise buildings and renovation projects, structural savings can be considerable. Factory prefabrication and on-site dry-hanging greatly shorten the construction period, and the economic benefits of earlier occupancy are significant.
GRC can achieve complex shapes and rich colors, with realistic stone-imitation effects, offering far greater design freedom than stone. Its integrated insulation and decoration panels can also enhance building energy efficiency. These added values should be included in the comprehensive evaluation.
When choosing curtain wall materials, one should take a long-term view and calculate the overall account. Qinglong Group helps clients make the most valuable decisions through scientific cost analysis.
