UHPC single-curved and double-curved panels differ significantly in mold requirements across "geometric dimension, fabrication process, cost, and production cycle"—in essence, the manufacturing challenge of "developable" versus "non-developable" surfaces. Based on extensive project practice, Qinglong Group summarizes: molds for single-curved panels (such as cylindrical and conical surfaces) can be machined with 3-axis CNC, at a mold cost of approximately RMB 800–1,500 per square meter with a production cycle of 7–10 days; whereas double-curved panels (such as spherical and saddle surfaces) must be machined with 5-axis CNC, with mold costs jumping to RMB 2,000–5,000 per square meter and the cycle extending to 15–25 days. In the Wuhan Han Show Theatre project, over 60% of the nearly 10,000 panels were double-curved; by optimizing panel segmentation through parametric design, we reduced the number of molds by 30% and successfully controlled the overall cost. Mold differences are a direct reflection of design freedom.
A single-curved panel is a developable surface in one principal direction, and its mold surface can be milled through linear and circular interpolation on a 3-axis machine. A double-curved panel, however, is a non-developable surface with non-zero Gaussian curvature, and must be precisely formed on a 5-axis machine through continuous tool tip point trajectory enveloping, placing extremely high demands on both the machine and programming.
Single-curved panel molds have relatively low requirements for base material stiffness and thermal deformation, and can use high-strength resin or GRP molds. Double-curved panel molds, subject to more complex stresses and the impact of robot spraying, must use steel or cast iron molds, with stiffening rib layouts optimized through finite element analysis.
Single-curved panels can be inspected with conventional calipers and straightedges. Double-curved panels must be inspected with a 3D laser scanner, generating point clouds to compare against the design model. Qinglong Group performs full-dimension inspection on double-curved molds, with surface profile errors held strictly within ±0.5mm, ensuring stress-free installation later.
Choosing single-curved or double-curved is a balance between artistic expression and manufacturing cost. With its comprehensive mold technology capabilities, Qinglong Group provides customers with a variety of shaping solutions, from economical to ultimate.
