The choice of mold material for UHPC components directly affects product precision, surface quality, and production cost—it is the first hurdle in realizing design intent. As an industry leader with 28 years of deep expertise in UHPC, Qinglong Group has drawn on hands-on experience from national-level landmark projects such as the double-curved curtain wall of the Wuhan Han Show Theatre and the wave-shaped roof of the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center to categorize commonly used mold materials into three systems—"steel molds, resin molds, and composite molds"—and has distilled the selection principle: "steel molds for precision first, resin molds for complex shapes, composite molds for mass production." In the UHPC curtain wall project of the Shenzhen Yirui Biotechnology Building, we used high-precision steel molds (tolerance ±0.1mm) to secure the dimensions of key areas across nearly ten thousand irregular-shaped panels, while resin molds enabled rapid forming of locally complex relief elements, raising overall production efficiency by 40% and cutting mold costs by 25%. Scientific mold selection is the art of balancing UHPC quality and cost.
Steel molds (e.g., 45# steel, P20 pre-hardened steel) offer high hardness and good wear resistance, can be reused more than 1,000 times, and deliver excellent dimensional stability. Qinglong Group uses imported five-axis CNC machining centers to fabricate steel molds with surface precision of ±0.1mm, ideal for the mass production of high-precision components such as flat panels and standard profiles. In the Nanning Wuxiang China Resources MixC project, the 3,000 UHPC cladding panels produced with steel molds had thickness tolerances controlled within ±0.5mm, with joints as uniform as a single piece. However, steel molds require large initial investment and long fabrication cycles (about 15-20 days), making them suitable for large-volume orders.
Epoxy or polyurethane resin molds have short fabrication cycles (5-7 days) and low cost, and can perfectly replicate stone textures and relief details. Qinglong Group uses Swiss Ciba resin with a shrinkage rate of ≤0.1%, combined with 3D-printed prototypes, to achieve "design-to-production." In the "Guancao Weaving" facade of the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center, resin molds precisely translated the woven-grass texture, achieving 95% fidelity. However, resin molds last about 50-100 uses, making them suitable for small batches of complex artistic components.
Fiberglass (GRP) molds combine the strength of steel molds (lifespan of 200-300 uses) with the flexibility of resin molds at a moderate cost. In the Hainan Changying Paradise project, Qinglong Group used GRP molds to produce European-style components, with each mold yielding more than 200 pieces and costs 40% lower than steel molds. In recent years, we have explored nylon sintering molds (SLS technology) for trial production, cutting the cycle to 3 days—ideal for personalized customization.
Mold selection requires comprehensive consideration of order volume, shape complexity, and cost budget. Qinglong Group has established a mold database to provide customers with optimal full-lifecycle solutions, turning creative designs perfectly into reality.
