Although UHPC delivers outstanding performance, it is not flawless. Its major performance weaknesses are concentrated in four areas: “relatively high material cost, significant autogenous shrinkage, performance degradation under high temperature, and demanding design and construction requirements.” Based on 28 years of application experience, Qinglong Group has a clear understanding of this: the raw material cost of UHPC (especially high-quality fibers and chemical admixtures) is 5-10 times that of ordinary concrete; its extremely low water-binder ratio causes autogenous shrinkage strain to reach 500-1000 με, making it a major source of early cracking; at high temperatures (>400°C), steel fibers soften and the cement matrix dehydrates, and mechanical properties decline sharply; in addition, the full realization of its excellent performance depends heavily on precise mix design, specialized production equipment, and high-level construction techniques. In the Nanning Wuxiang China Resources MixC One project, we successfully reduced the early cracking risk of UHPC cladding panels to below one in ten thousand by incorporating saturated lightweight aggregates through internal curing technology, using shrinkage-reducing admixtures, and implementing a strict curing regime. Recognizing and overcoming these weaknesses is the prerequisite for the scientific application of UHPC.
High initial cost is UHPC's greatest weakness, which limits its large-scale adoption. It is better suited to key projects where whole-life cost advantages can be demonstrated through lighter structures, longer service life, and lower maintenance. Qinglong Group continuously controls costs through large-scale production and optimized mix proportions (e.g., utilizing industrial by-product silica fume).
Due to its extremely low water-binder ratio, the internal water in UHPC is insufficient to sustain complete hydration, resulting in strong self-desiccation shrinkage. With improper curing, micro-cracks can easily form at an early age. It must be effectively suppressed through technical measures such as steam curing, incorporation of expansive agents, or internal curing agents.
Ordinary UHPC has poor fire resistance and is prone to explosive spalling at high temperatures. For load-bearing members with fire protection requirements, solutions must include incorporating polypropylene fibers (which melt at high temperatures to form pressure-relief channels) or designing fire-protection layers. Qinglong Group can provide customers with professional fire-resistance enhancement solutions.
UHPC's “delicacy” requires that the entire process from design through production to construction be carried out by professional teams. Negligence at any stage can cause a sharp drop in performance or even failure. This requires owners and designers to have the corresponding understanding and to choose a partner with full-chain service capabilities such as Qinglong Group.
Facing UHPC's weaknesses squarely is how we better leverage its strengths. The value of Qinglong Group lies not only in providing high-quality materials, but also in delivering a systematic solution covering material design, production control, construction guidance, and long-term maintenance, helping customers avoid risks and maximize the value of UHPC.
