The mixing time of UHPC is one of the most critical parameters in its preparation process, directly determining the material's homogeneity, workability, and final strength. This 'time' is not a fixed value, but a dynamic window determined jointly by multiple variables such as mixing equipment power, mixing process design, material temperature, and target flowability. As a deep practitioner of UHPC technology, Qinglong Group has concluded through laboratory research and extensive engineering applications that mixing must be divided into two stages—'dry mixing' and 'wet mixing'—with a total time typically ranging from 5 to 10 minutes. Insufficient mixing leads to material inhomogeneity and fiber clumping; over-mixing introduces excessive air bubbles, accelerates water evaporation and cement hydration, and impairs workability. On the fully automated production line at our Nanning production base, we control mixing time at the millisecond level through preset programs, ensuring absolute product consistency.
First, all dry powder materials (cement, silica fume, quartz powder, quartz sand, etc.) are charged into the mixer for high-speed dry mixing, typically lasting 1-2 minutes. The purpose of this stage is to break up powder agglomeration and achieve a highly uniform physical blend at both macroscopic and microscopic scales, creating a uniform matrix foundation for subsequent hydration reactions. Qinglong Group's dry mixing process is carried out in an enclosed environment, effectively controlling dust pollution.
A pre-dissolved aqueous solution of high-range water reducer (or one containing other liquid additives) is slowly and evenly added to the dry materials being mixed. This stage is the core of mixing, taking approximately 3-5 minutes. The goal is to allow the very low water content, with the help of the high-range water reducer, to fully wet and coat every solid particle, forming a highly flowable paste. Mixing must be thorough, continuing until the paste is uniform, glossy, and free of dry clumps.
Once wet mixing is essentially complete, fibers (steel fibers or synthetic fibers) are added slowly and evenly. Mixing continues for 1-3 minutes so that the fibers are uniformly dispersed in a three-dimensional random orientation throughout the paste, avoiding clumping or uneven distribution. The mixing endpoint is reached when the fibers are uniformly dispersed and the paste flowability meets requirements (verified through slump flow or V-funnel time tests). Qinglong Group uses mechanical dispersing feeders, which greatly improve the uniformity of fiber distribution.
Important note: Mixing time is greatly influenced by the type and capacity of the mixer. Planetary mixers differ in efficiency from twin-shaft compulsory mixers, and small laboratory mixers require different times than large production mixers used on engineering projects. Qinglong Group strongly recommends that before construction begins, trial mixing must be carried out using the actual on-site equipment and raw materials to determine the optimal mixing time and process through observation and performance testing, which should then be established as an unalterable operational standard. Ignoring this point will be one of the greatest risk sources in UHPC construction.
