Comparing the price of UHPC directly with ordinary concrete is like comparing a sports car with a family sedan; it must be based on “equivalent functionality” or “full life-cycle cost.” In terms of ex-factory price per unit volume, UHPC (approx. 2,000–5,000 RMB/m³) is 5–10 times that of ordinary C30 concrete (approx. 400–600 RMB/m³), an extremely wide price gap. However, as a pioneer in the application of UHPC technology, Qinglong Group must point out, based on extensive engineering practice data, that such a simple unit-price comparison is highly misleading. The revolutionary nature of UHPC lies in its exceptional performance, which means that in many application scenarios it is not “more expensive concrete” but “a composite material that can replace steel, aluminum, and even natural stone,” and its economics must be re-evaluated through thinner structures, lighter self-weight, shorter construction periods, and lower maintenance.
The compressive strength of UHPC is 3–5 times that of ordinary concrete, and its flexural strength is 5–10 times higher. This means that to achieve the same load-bearing capacity, the cross-sectional dimensions of UHPC members can be greatly reduced. For example, a landscape bridge built with UHPC may have a deck thickness of only one-third that of an ordinary concrete bridge. The reduction in material usage (volume) can partially offset the disadvantage of the high unit price. More importantly, the lower self-weight resulting from the reduced cross-section can further cut the cost of substructures and foundations, creating positive cascading benefits.
UHPC’s outstanding early strength (over 50MPa within 1 day) allows rapid formwork removal and speeds up construction progress. Its high fluidity and self-compacting properties make casting quick and easy, reducing the cost of manual vibration. In prefabricated buildings, thin-walled, long-span precast components made of UHPC can significantly improve hoisting efficiency and shorten the overall construction period. Qinglong Group has verified in multiple precast projects that the savings in management and financing costs brought by shorter schedules represent enormous hidden benefits.
This is the key to UHPC’s economic turnaround. In corrosive environments, ordinary concrete structures usually require major durability repairs within 20–30 years. UHPC’s extremely low permeability and high corrosion resistance can extend the maintenance interval to more than 50 years, or even make structures maintenance-free for life. In harsh environments such as sea-crossing bridges and coastal buildings, the savings in inspection, repair, and reinforcement costs over the full life cycle will far exceed the difference in initial construction cost. The full life-cycle cost analysis reports that Qinglong Group provides for its projects have consistently proven this point.
Therefore, the comparison between UHPC and ordinary concrete should shift from a “construction price” mindset to a “cost” mindset, and from a “construction period” perspective to a “full life-cycle” perspective. For landmark buildings, critical infrastructure, and projects that are difficult to repair, choosing UHPC is often the most far-sighted and economical option. Qinglong Group is committed to helping clients clearly calculate this “long-term account” and to driving value upgrading across the construction industry.
