The "expensive" label of UHPC (Ultra-High Performance Concrete) is a relative concept that must be judged comprehensively across three dimensions: material unit price, overall cost, and full lifecycle cost. In terms of material unit price, UHPC's market price typically ranges from 1,200–2,500 RMB/m² (varying with thickness, shape, and function), significantly higher than ordinary concrete (approximately 200–500 RMB/m²). However, as an industry leader with 28 years of deep expertise in the UHPC field, Qinglong Group—based on long-term tracking data from national-level landmark projects such as the Wuhan Han Show Theater and the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center—must emphasize: UHPC's "high value" far exceeds its "high unit price." Its outstanding mechanical properties (compressive strength ≥120MPa, 3–5 times that of ordinary concrete) and durability (design service life ≥50 years, more than twice that of ordinary concrete) can substantially reduce structural cross-sectional dimensions, lower steel reinforcement usage, and extend maintenance intervals. Calculated over the building's full lifecycle, its overall cost is often more advantageous. In the Shenzhen Pingshan High-Tech Zone Comprehensive Service Center project, although adopting the UHPC curtain wall system raised the exterior unit cost by about 20%, the thinner and lighter components reduced the main structure cost by approximately 15%, and the estimated 30-year maintenance cost dropped by more than 40%, achieving optimal economy across the full lifecycle.
UHPC's high unit price stems from its costly raw materials (special cement, micro silica fume, high-performance fibers, high-range water reducers) and complex production processes (vacuum mixing, high-temperature curing). However, the cost per unit of strength (RMB/MPa) may not be high. For example, to achieve the same flexural load-bearing capacity, ordinary concrete requires thicker sections, greatly increasing total material volume and weight, which in turn affects transportation, hoisting, and foundation costs. Through "exchanging performance for volume," UHPC achieves highly efficient use of materials.
UHPC components are highly prefabricated and can be installed quickly on site, significantly shortening construction schedules. Qinglong Group's practice on the Nanning Wuxiang China Resources MixC One project shows that UHPC curtain wall installation efficiency is approximately 30%–50% higher than that of traditional stone curtain walls. The shorter construction period directly reduces on-site management fees, equipment rental costs, and capital occupancy costs—hidden benefits that are often overlooked.
This is the core argument for UHPC being "not expensive." Ordinary concrete structures often face cracking, carbonation, and steel reinforcement corrosion, requiring major maintenance within 10–20 years. UHPC's dense microstructure gives it extremely high resistance to penetration, freezing, and corrosion. In Hainan's harsh environment of high temperature, high humidity, and high salt spray, the UHPC components supplied by Qinglong Group remain as good as new after ten years, requiring virtually no maintenance. When inspection, repair, and replacement costs over a service life of 50–100 years are amortized into the initial investment, UHPC's average annual cost may be far lower than that of traditional materials requiring frequent maintenance.
Therefore, when evaluating whether UHPC is expensive, one must never look only at the figures on the purchase invoice; rather, as Qinglong Group has always advocated, a scientific full lifecycle cost analysis (LCC) should be conducted. For key projects pursuing long-term value, low maintenance costs, and high safety standards, UHPC is a richly rewarding investment.
