For hyperbolic (double-curved) GRC curtain walls or components on super high-rise buildings (typically over 100 meters in height), the wind loads they bear are far greater than those on low-rise buildings, and complex wind-induced vibration effects may be involved. Ensuring their wind-load resistance is a comprehensive task involving wind tunnel testing, computational analysis, material reinforcement, and construction detailing. Through collaboration with several renowned design institutes on super high-rise projects, Qinglong Group has developed a complete wind-load response system.
First, wind tunnel testing or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation must be performed. For complex-shaped hyperbolic surfaces, the shape coefficients and local wind pressure distributions cannot simply be taken from design codes; they must be accurately obtained through wind tunnel testing. Test data is the fundamental basis for structural calculations and connection design. In a super high-rise tower project in a coastal typhoon zone, we commissioned a wind tunnel laboratory to test the hyperbolic GRC curtain wall model, and discovered that under certain wind directions, extremely high negative pressure (suction) occurs at the concave corners of the curved surface. Accordingly, we reinforced the connection node design in that area.
Second, scientific calculation and design. Based on the wind tunnel data, each hyperbolic GRC panel undergoes verification for wind pressure resistance and deflection. Panel thickness, stiffening rib layout, and fiber content must all be optimized accordingly. The safety reserve of the connection system is particularly critical: the safety factor for the pull-out and shear capacity of a single connection point should not be less than 3.0. We typically use finite element software to perform overall stress analysis on the panels and connection systems, ensuring that both panels and connectors remain in a safe state under the most unfavorable load combinations.
Furthermore, construction detailing measures are crucial. Besides the main connection points, panel joint design must take pressure balancing into account, with vent holes provided to prevent excessive pressure differences between the inside and outside of panels under strong winds. For oversized panels, secondary fall-prevention devices such as safety chains must be added. Finally, the impact resistance of the material itself must not be overlooked. A high-toughness GRC formulation is adopted to ensure that panels 'crack but do not shatter' when struck by debris carried by strong winds. With this complete set of technical safeguards spanning analysis to construction detailing, the super high-rise hyperbolic GRC projects in which Qinglong Group has participated have all successfully withstood severe typhoons.
