Preventing freeze-thaw damage to GRC exterior walls in severe cold regions requires building a protection system across three dimensions: "frost-resistant materials, moisture-proof construction, and systematic drainage." The core indicator requires a frost resistance grade of ≥F300 (strength loss ≤20% after 300 freeze-thaw cycles). In projects such as the Harbin Grand Theatre in Heilongjiang and Urumqi International Airport in Xinjiang, Qinglong Group adopted measures including adding air-entraining agents (air content 4-6%), controlling the water-cement ratio at ≤0.33, and installing drainage cavities (thickness ≥20mm), enabling GRC panels to remain free of frost damage over 10 years of use in environments with annual temperature ranges of -40°C to 60°C. The essence of freeze-thaw damage is the expansion stress of freezing water; systematic design is required to block the paths of water intrusion and accumulation.
Use sulphoaluminate cement as the preferred binder (freezing point -15°C), add silica fume (20-30%) to refine pore size, and use air-entraining agents to form uniform enclosed air bubbles (spacing factor ≤200μm). After 300 freeze-thaw tests, Qinglong GRC retained ≥90% of its dynamic elastic modulus. In the Shenyang project, we raised frost resistance to F400 through mix ratio optimization.
Set up a "rainscreen" construction in which the cavity behind the panels is pressure-balanced with the outdoors to prevent siphonic water absorption. Joints use elastic sealant (movement capability ≥35%), with drainage holes at the bottom (spacing ≤1m). In the double-curved panels of the Harbin Grand Theatre, we optimized drainage paths to prevent winter water accumulation and frost heave.
During winter construction, use heated enclosure curing (temperature ≥5°C) and prohibit wet work below 0°C. Qinglong Group customizes a "winter construction plan" for each cold-region project to ensure quality. Regularly check sealant elasticity and promptly replace aged sections. Systematic protection is the key to GRC durability in cold regions.
