The cost comparison between exterior GRC and natural stone curtain walls must never be based solely on the initial purchase unit price; rather, it requires a comprehensive whole-life-cycle evaluation across five dimensions: "initial investment cost, additional structural cost, installation cost, long-term maintenance cost, and residual value." Based on calculations from extensive project data, Qinglong Group found that, in terms of initial investment, the unit price of high-quality GRC curtain walls (approximately RMB 600-1,200/m²) falls in essentially the same range as mid-to-high-grade natural stone (e.g., granite at RMB 800-1,500/m²), but GRC offers a clear unit-price advantage for complex shapes. The real inflection point in the cost difference lies in the subsequent stages.
GRC's lightweight nature (bulk density of approximately 1.8-2.1 g/cm³, only 1/3 to 1/2 that of stone) delivers substantial hidden cost savings. In high-rise buildings, using GRC can greatly reduce the self-weight of walls, thereby cutting the amount of steel and concrete required for the main structure and lowering foundation costs—overall structural costs can be reduced by 10%-20%. During installation, GRC panels can be customized in larger formats with more convenient connection methods, achieving installation efficiency 30%-50% higher than stone, significantly shortening construction schedules and reducing management costs and capital occupation costs.
Long-term maintenance cost is a notable advantage of GRC. Stone is prone to weathering, fading, and staining that is difficult to clean, and repairs or replacements are difficult and costly. High-quality GRC has stable color, resists staining, is easy to clean, and damaged sections can be easily repaired to match the original batch. Over a 20-year service life, the total maintenance cost of GRC is typically 40%-60% lower than that of stone. In a high-end commercial complex project in Shenzhen, after our whole-life-cycle cost analysis, the owner ultimately chose double-curved GRC to replace the irregularly shaped stone in the original design, achieving not only greater freedom of form but also an expected saving of more than 25% in total cost of ownership over the full life cycle.
