One of the most remarkable characteristics of UHPC is its extremely rapid early strength development. Under standard curing conditions (20±2°C, humidity >95%), high-quality UHPC can reach a compressive strength of 40-60MPa within 12-24 hours after casting, which already exceeds the 28-day standard strength of ordinary C30 concrete. Typically, its 3-day strength can reach 70%-80% of the 28-day strength, its 7-day strength can exceed 90%, and the design strength (e.g., 120MPa, 150MPa) is achieved at 28 days. This ultra-fast strength gain makes it possible to shorten construction schedules, apply prestressing early, carry loads at an early age, or achieve rapid formwork removal and turnaround, but it also imposes extremely stringent requirements on construction pacing and early-age curing.
The rate of strength development is influenced by multiple factors. First is the mix design, where the reactivity of the cementitious materials, the water-binder ratio, and curing conditions play a decisive role. Qinglong Group's UHPC, through an optimized cementitious system, achieves a more rational and stable strength development curve. Second is curing temperature: rising temperatures significantly accelerate strength development, but note that temperature differentials between the interior and exterior may cause cracking. Most critical of all is curing humidity. UHPC has an extremely low water-binder ratio, with just enough internal water for hydration. If surface moisture evaporates too quickly, not only is the surface strength compromised, but severe early-age plastic shrinkage cracking may also occur. Once such cracks form, they can never heal—this is a cardinal taboo in UHPC construction.
Therefore, UHPC has a "golden curing window for strength development"—the few hours after casting and before initial setting begins. Effective moisture-retention curing measures, such as covering with water-retaining film or spraying curing compound, must be initiated within this window and sustained for at least 7 days. Formwork removal time should be determined according to the strength test results of companion specimens cured under the same site conditions, rather than a fixed schedule. For components that need to bear load early, decisions must be based on measured strength. Understanding and respecting the strength development behavior of UHPC is the final—and most crucial—checkpoint for ensuring it delivers its exceptional performance.
