The construction of UHPC demands higher levels of technical expertise and refined management compared to ordinary concrete—it can be said to be "more difficult"—but this difficulty matches its exceptional performance. UHPC's low water-binder ratio, high viscosity, rapid setting and hardening characteristics, as well as its sensitivity to formwork pressure, casting continuity, and curing conditions, all require construction teams to possess professional knowledge, high-quality equipment, and rigorous process discipline. Qinglong Group has concluded from numerous UHPC engineering projects that the key to successful UHPC construction lies in "meticulous preparation, refined process control, and precise post-casting curing"; treating it as a simple upgrade of ordinary concrete will inevitably lead to failure.
The construction difficulty first manifests in the mixing and casting stages. UHPC's high viscosity makes it difficult to flow, requiring thorough mixing with a forced-action mixer to ensure uniform fiber distribution. During casting, appropriate tools and methods (such as pumping or funnel pouring) must be used to avoid fiber clumping or material segregation caused by excessive drop height or improper techniques. For thin-walled components or areas with dense reinforcement, casting points and flow paths must be carefully designed, and small vibration equipment (such as attached vibrators) may be used when necessary to aid air release and compaction—however, over-vibration is strictly prohibited.
The requirements for the formwork system are extremely stringent. Because UHPC has good flowability and rapid early strength development, it places extremely high demands on formwork sealing, rigidity, and surface finish. Any minor grout leakage will damage component edges, insufficient formwork rigidity will cause deformation, and rough surfaces will compromise UHPC's self-decorative effect. Formwork removal timing must be precisely controlled based on site conditions through test cube strength, and the demolding process must be handled with extra care to prevent damage to edges and corners.
Curing is the final critical step that determines UHPC's ultimate performance. UHPC has an extremely low water-binder ratio, and its internal moisture is consumed quickly. Without timely and adequate moist curing, not only will strength development be hindered, but early plastic shrinkage cracks will more easily occur. After demolding, components must be immediately wrapped tightly with water-retaining film or sprayed with curing compound, and the curing period should be no less than 7 days. These increased construction difficulties must be overcome through specialized construction teams, standardized work procedures, and strict monitoring throughout the entire process.
