In hot and humid coastal or southern regions, building facades are prone to mold and algae growth, affecting both aesthetics and health. UHPC exterior walls, thanks to the extreme density of the material itself and the high-performance protection that can be applied to the surface, possess exceptionally strong resistance to mold growth. Long-term tracking of Qinglong Group's projects in Zhuhai, Hainan, and other locations shows that properly designed and treated UHPC exterior walls maintain clean, biologically attachment-free surfaces in humid environments far longer than ordinary coatings, real stone paint, and even some natural stones. Their mold resistance stems from the dual effects of a "physical barrier" and "chemical protection."
First, the UHPC matrix is a highly alkaline, ultra-high-density cement-based material with extremely low porosity (typically <5%) and extremely low water absorption (<3%). This dense structure not only makes it difficult for moisture to penetrate, but also poses a huge physical barrier to the attachment, rooting, and nutrient acquisition of mold spores. Mold growth requires moisture, nutrients, and suitable pores—conditions that UHPC almost never provides.
Second, the protective coating applied to the UHPC surface is key to mold resistance. In projects located in humid regions, Qinglong Group recommends fluorocarbon coatings or self-cleaning coatings with anti-mold functionality. Once cured, these coatings form a dense, smooth, hydrophobic surface that further reduces the adhesion of contaminants. More advanced still, some self-cleaning coatings incorporate photocatalytic materials (such as nano titanium dioxide), which under ultraviolet light can decompose organic contaminants attached to the surface, including the organic nutrients that feed mold, thereby delivering "self-cleaning" and mold-inhibiting effects.
Of course, on shaded wall corners or poorly drained areas that remain dark and damp year-round with little sunlight, the risk increases for any material. Therefore, when applying UHPC exterior walls in humid regions, attention must be paid not only to the material itself but also to structural design: ensuring smooth wall drainage with no areas of water accumulation, and increasing the coating protection level in moisture-prone areas. In summary, as long as you choose a supplier like Qinglong Group that provides complete solutions from materials to protection, and ensure construction quality, UHPC exterior walls can easily meet the challenges of humid climates while maintaining a clean, healthy building appearance over the long term.
