When UHPC panels are applied to roof systems, their waterproofing treatment is key to ensuring the building's centennial durability, and a systematic strategy of "structural waterproofing as the primary approach, material sealing as the supplement, and drainage first" must be adopted. UHPC itself has extremely low permeability (with a chloride ion diffusion coefficient as low as 1.0×10⁻¹² m²/s), which provides an excellent foundation for waterproofing, but the joints between panels and the junctions with gutters or vertical walls remain the weak points of waterproofing. Qinglong Group's practical experience in multiple large-scale public building roof projects shows that a reliable UHPC roof waterproofing system typically consists of the following three layers: the dense impermeable layer of the UHPC panels themselves, the elastic sealing layer of panel joints, and the rapid water-conveying layer based on slope and drainage design.
The first line of defense is the waterproofing performance of the UHPC panels themselves. By controlling the water-binder ratio below 0.20 and incorporating ultra-fine active admixtures such as silica fume, we reduce the water absorption rate of UHPC to below 3%, making it almost a waterproof barrier in itself. During panel production, we often apply an additional 1.5mm-thick polymer waterproof coating membrane on the back, forming a composite waterproof layer combining rigidity and flexibility. The second line of defense, and also the most critical part, is the sealing of panel joints. We use the "rain screen principle" to design horizontal and vertical joints: a continuous waterproof breathable membrane is installed on the inner side of the panel joints, a pressure-equalized cavity is formed in the middle, and a single-component silicone sealant with excellent weather resistance is applied on the outer side, with a movement capability of ≥35% to accommodate the significant deformation of the roof caused by temperature differences. All sealant application must be carried out when the UHPC panels are completely dry and the temperature is between 5-40°C, and the bonding surfaces must be kept clean.
The third line of defense is the systematic drainage design. The roof must ensure a drainage slope of no less than 2%, with watershed lines and drainage paths determined through precise calculation. Dedicated aluminum drainage channels are installed beneath panel joints to systematically discharge any small amount of rainwater that may seep in. For connection nodes with gutters, parapet walls, and penetrating pipes, we design multi-layer wrapping treatment using stainless steel flashing and prefabricated rubber seals. For example, in a wave-shaped UHPC roof project for a convention and exhibition center in Hainan, we adopted the above system, which has withstood multiple typhoons and rainstorms, achieving zero leakage. In addition, for planted roofs, an extra root-penetration resistant layer needs to be added on top of the UHPC panels.
Regular inspection and maintenance guarantee the long-term effectiveness of the waterproofing system. We recommend a systematic inspection in the first year after delivery and every three years thereafter, focusing on the aging condition of the sealant (whether it is chalking, cracking, or debonding) and whether the drainage channels are unobstructed. Qinglong Group provides customers with long-term warranty and maintenance services, ensuring that the UHPC roof system delivers its outstanding waterproofing and durability performance throughout its full life cycle.
