Outdoor UHPC panels are directly exposed to environments such as sunlight, rain, and hot-cold cycling, and their UV aging resistance is key to assessing long-term durability and color stability. Thanks to a microstructure so dense it is nearly water-impermeable, together with special additives that can be incorporated, high-quality UHPC delivers exceptional UV aging resistance—far surpassing ordinary concrete and even outperforming many natural stones. Qinglong Group has verified this outstanding long-term weather resistance through tracking and testing of outdoor UHPC projects that have been in service for more than 10 years.
UHPC's ability to resist UV aging is first rooted in its "naturally beautiful" dense matrix. Its water-binder ratio is extremely low (typically below 0.22), and through the filling of ultrafine powders (such as silica fume) and the action of high-range water reducers, a microstructure with extremely low porosity and very small pore sizes is formed. UV rays, moisture, and harmful ions in the air can hardly penetrate into the material's interior. This means that aging processes such as matrix photodegradation and carbonation—driven by UV catalysis and moisture involvement—are greatly delayed. Experimental data show that for standard-cured UHPC, the surface carbonation depth after 10 years of outdoor exposure is almost negligible (less than 0.1mm).
Second, for UHPC with color requirements, we ensure color fastness in two ways. First, we use inorganic mineral pigments (such as iron oxide series), which have inherently very high UV stability and are not prone to decomposition and fading. Second, we add UV absorbers (such as nano titanium dioxide) to the surface layer or the entire mix. Nano TiO2 not only effectively absorbs and scatters UV rays, but also decomposes organic pollutants on the surface through photocatalysis, giving UHPC a certain self-cleaning function. In a colored UHPC facade project in Guangdong that was completed 8 years ago, the color difference ΔE values we measured periodically have always remained stable within 2.0, with changes almost imperceptible to the naked eye.
In addition, to further enhance durability and facilitate maintenance, the surface of outdoor UHPC panels is usually treated with a high-performance protective coating, such as a fluorocarbon resin coating or a silane impregnating agent. A fluorocarbon coating is like putting a "sun-protection jacket" on UHPC—the bond energy of the F-C bonds in its molecular structure is extremely high, effectively blocking UV rays and various corrosive media. Overall, for a UHPC panel with proper mix design, fabrication, and surface protection, it is entirely expected to maintain the stability of its core performance and appearance in outdoor environments for more than 50 years. We recommend that in regions with extreme climates, professional surface cleaning and a protective agent inspection every 10-15 years can keep it looking as good as new for a long time.
