The parametric design workflow for GRC irregular shapes is a set of digital generation and optimization logic that runs from conceptual form to buildable components. It is not simply modeling; rather, it uses algorithms to integrate design intent, structural logic, manufacturing constraints, and cost control into one unified whole, achieving efficient, precise, and adjustable design. When Qinglong Group designed the complex GRC acoustic reflector panels for a theater in Guangzhou, it applied the complete parametric workflow, generating over a thousand components with varied forms but unified logic within a short time, and these directly drove CNC production.
The workflow begins with "logic construction and parameter setting." Designers or engineers no longer directly "sculpt" the final form; instead, they write algorithms (commonly using tools such as Grasshopper) to define the form-generation rules. For example, the curved surface of a reflector panel is defined as a function of the sound source position, the subdivision of unit panels is linked to the framing grid, and the panel dimensions and curvature are set as adjustable parameters. The core of this stage is to establish a flexible "digital skeleton": any design change requires adjusting only a few parameters, and the system will automatically update all related components, greatly improving the efficiency of scheme comparison and optimization.
The process then enters the "performance simulation and constructability analysis" stage. The generated digital model is immediately imported into analysis software for multiple verifications: structural finite element analysis checks its stress and deformation under wind loads; manufacturing feasibility analysis checks for issues such as negative angles, inability to demold, or excessively small curvature radii; and the cost estimation module provides real-time feedback on cost changes based on area and complexity. In the theater project, we optimized the curvature angles of the panels through acoustic simulation, automatically added stiffening ribs in weak areas through structural analysis, and used manufacturing analysis to keep panel dimensions within a reasonable range for molds and transportation.
The final stage is "data output and production integration." The parametric model is directly exported as the data "packages" required for production, including: precise 3D models of each component (for CNC machining of molds), 2D machining drawings, a bill of materials (BOM), and even installation sequences and coordinates. These data connect seamlessly to the factory's production line through the enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. Laser cutting machines read the data to cut the stiffening ribs, and five-axis machine tools read the data to carve the molds, achieving true "design-production" integration. This workflow, with data as its link and algorithms as its engine, not only solves the challenge of realizing irregular shapes but also brings GRC manufacturing from a traditional handicraft industry into a new era of intelligent manufacturing.
