Key Points for Connecting GRC Exterior Walls with Door and Window Openings: Coordinated Design of Waterproof Sealing and Structural Deformation

The junction between GRC exterior walls and door/window openings is a frequent trouble spot for waterproofing, stress concentration, and aesthetic issues, and the quality of its treatment directly affects the building's overall performance. Drawing on years of experience, Qinglong Group concludes that successful junction treatment must simultaneously address three major challenges: "water tightness," "structural deformation adaptability," and "visual integrity." Our core principles are "draining water over blocking it, flexible connections to accommodate deformation, and combining construction detailing with sealant application." In a high-end residential project in Hangzhou, refined design successfully achieved a record of zero leakage around openings under typhoon and heavy rain conditions.

Waterproof sealing is the primary task of junction treatment, and we adopt a strategy of "multiple lines of defense with drainage as the priority." The first line of defense is the structural waterproof cavity between the GRC panel and the door/window sub-frame, typically 15-20mm wide, in which a continuous waterproof vapor barrier is installed and fully welded to the sub-frame's waterproofing layer. The second line of defense is the exterior weather-resistant sealant: a silicone sealant with a movement capability of no less than 25% should be chosen; before application, the substrate must be clean and dry, and a closed-cell foam backer rod must be inserted to ensure the sealant bonds in a dumbbell shape. Critically, a drip groove or drip nose must be provided at the window lintel, and the window sill must be given an outward drainage slope of no less than 10% to fundamentally direct rainwater away from the joints.

Structural deformation adaptability design concerns long-term service safety. GRC panels and the concrete or steel main structure have different deformation coefficients, and door/window frames themselves undergo thermal expansion and contraction. Therefore, connections must use a flexible "fixed-distance clamping" approach. We typically use slotted-hole stainless steel angle brackets to connect GRC panels to the main structure, allowing ±3mm of in-plane movement. A gap of no less than 8mm is retained between the GRC panel and the door/window sub-frame and filled with elastic closed-cell foam strips. All sealant work must be carried out only after the GRC panels have been installed for at least 14 days and their initial drying shrinkage has basically stabilized, so as to prevent the sealant from being torn apart by the material's own shrinkage.

Visual integrity and finishing details determine the final quality. We advocate that GRC opening trim profiles should be designed as integrally precast components rather than assembled on site, to ensure strength and aesthetics at the corners. The thickness and projection of the trim must precisely match the door/window frame dimensions, typically with a 5mm visual buffer joint left and filled with sealant in the same color as the panel surface to achieve an "invisible" finish. During construction, laser setting-out must be used for positioning to ensure the installation accuracy of the GRC components on all four sides of the opening is within ±1.5mm. Through such refined treatment that deeply integrates functional requirements with aesthetic pursuit, GRC exterior walls and door/window openings can achieve a flawless, seamless junction.
