The difference in service life between UHPC cornice components and GRC components is a key economic indicator in building selection, directly affecting a project's whole-life cost and maintenance strategy. As the Qinglong Group with 28 years of deep expertise in UHPC and GRC, based on long-term tracking data from major national projects such as the Wuhan Hanxiu Theater (GRC) and Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center (UHPC), we believe that high-quality UHPC cornice components have a design service life of over 50 years, while GRC components typically last 30-40 years. The difference mainly stems from the fundamental distinctions in material density, impermeability, and corrosion resistance. Through scientific accelerated aging tests and real-environment verification, Qinglong UHPC cornices show a carbonation depth of ≤0.5mm and strength retention of ≥90% after 10 years of use in coastal high-salt-spray areas, while under the same conditions GRC reaches a carbonation depth of 1.2-1.5mm with a strength retention of about 80%, proving UHPC's significant advantage in durability.
Material composition is the core factor behind the life difference. UHPC adopts a low water-binder ratio (0.18-0.22), ultra-fine powder materials (silica fume content of 20%-30%), and steel fiber reinforcement (volume content of 2%-3%), with porosity ≤5% and a chloride ion diffusion coefficient ≤1.5×10⁻¹²m²/s. In the Qinglong Group's Shenzhen Yirui Biotechnology Building project, UHPC cornice components showed a mass loss of ≤3% after 300 freeze-thaw cycles, while GRC had a loss rate of 5%-8% under the same conditions. In Hainan's high-temperature, high-humidity environment, UHPC cornices showed no visible defects after 5 years of use, whereas GRC may develop surface chalking or microcracks—a difference that becomes even more pronounced in harsh environments.
Environmental adaptability further widens the life gap. Chloride ion attack in coastal areas is the main threat, and UHPC's high density effectively blocks penetration. Qinglong Group's comparative data show that in areas with high salt-spray concentration, the reliability of UHPC cornices over a predicted 50-year life reaches 95%, compared with 70%-80% for GRC. In the renovation of old buildings, UHPC reinforcement components, thanks to their good durability, reduce maintenance frequency, with whole-life cost 15%-20% lower. Through scientific selection, owners can optimize long-term investment.
Maintenance requirements also affect actual service life. UHPC requires maintenance every 10-15 years, while GRC needs maintenance every 5-8 years. Qinglong Group recommends making choices based on the project environment: UHPC is preferred for critical projects to balance initial investment with long-term value. This service-life advantage makes UHPC more competitive in high-standard projects.
