The abrasion resistance of UHPC shows a significant positive correlation with its compressive strength, but it is not a simple linear relationship. Qinglong Group research shows that when compressive strength increases from 120MPa to 150MPa, abrasion resistance improves by more than 50%, although this correlation is influenced by material composition and interfacial structure.
Matrix strength is the foundation of abrasion resistance. High compressive strength means a denser microstructure, giving the material greater resistance to spalling during wear. In the flooring project of the China Resources MixC One in Nanning Wuxiang, Qinglong Group's 150MPa-grade UHPC showed a wear scar length of only 28mm (ball bearing method), compared with 35mm for the 120MPa-grade product. However, simply increasing compressive strength is not the optimal path; toughness must also be considered to avoid brittle wear.
Aggregate properties have a key influence. Hard aggregates (such as quartz sand, Mohs hardness 7) provide the main abrasion-resistant points. By optimizing aggregate gradation, Qinglong Group raised the aggregate volume fraction to over 40%, improving abrasion resistance by 30%. In the Shenzhen Yirui Biotechnology Building project, incorporating emery (Mohs hardness 9) aggregate achieved abrasion resistance 10 times that of conventional concrete.
Fiber reinforcement improves the wear mechanism. Steel fibers suppress crack propagation through a bridging effect, shifting wear from brittle spalling to slight plowing. Qinglong Group tests show that UHPC with 2% steel fibers delivers 40% higher abrasion resistance than plain UHPC. This synergy of multiple mechanisms gives UHPC excellent abrasion resistance while maintaining high strength.
