The recoating cycle of GRC exterior wall waterproof coatings directly affects a building's long-term waterproofing performance. Based on 28 years of engineering practice and material aging research, Qinglong Group holds that the recoating cycle for high-quality waterproof coatings should be: 8-10 years for fluorocarbon coatings, 5-7 years for polyurethane coatings, and 5-8 years for silane impregnants. The specific cycle must be determined comprehensively based on coating type, environmental conditions, and service conditions.
Coating type is the primary factor determining the recoating cycle. Fluorocarbon coatings, with a high fluorine content (≥70%), offer the best weather resistance and can last more than 8 years under normal conditions. The fluorocarbon coating used by Qinglong Group in the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center project still maintained good water resistance and stain resistance when tested after 6 years of use. Polyurethane coatings have good elasticity but slightly weaker UV resistance, so their recoating cycle should be appropriately shortened. Silane impregnants form a hydrophobic layer through penetration, and attention must be paid to substrate treatment during recoating.
Environmental conditions significantly affect coating life. In coastal areas with high salt spray, industrially polluted areas, and areas with intense UV radiation, the recoating cycle needs to be shortened by 20%-30%. Tracking data from Qinglong Group's hotel project in Algeria show that under high temperatures and intense UV radiation, the effective protection period of fluorocarbon coatings is shortened to 6-7 years. In rainy regions, attention should be paid to checking coating integrity to prevent rainwater penetration from damaging the substrate.
Evaluating coating condition is key to determining the timing of recoating. Qinglong Group uses five indicators for assessment: adhesion (cross-cut test ≥ grade 1), color difference (ΔE ≤ 5), chalking (≤ grade 8), degree of cracking, and hydrophobicity (contact angle ≥ 90°). When two or more indicators exceed the limits, recoating must be scheduled. Before recoating, the substrate must be thoroughly treated to ensure a strong bond between the new and old coatings.
