Operation and maintenance of double-curved GRC curtain walls face challenges such as complex geometry, restricted working space, and special inspection methods. Based on its O&M experience with double-curved curtain wall projects such as the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center and the Guangxi New Media Center, Qinglong Group has summarized the unique difficulties and response strategies of double-curved GRC curtain walls in inspection access setup, damage detection, and cleaning and maintenance.
Setting up inspection access is the primary difficulty for double-curved curtain walls. Curved geometry often rules out conventional gondolas, requiring custom inspection equipment. In the wave-shaped roof project of the Hainan Convention and Exhibition Center, Qinglong Group developed a rail-mounted inspection robot that travels along the roof curve to complete panel surface inspection and cleaning. For concave curved surfaces, drones equipped with high-definition cameras are used for inspection. This intelligent inspection approach converts work that traditionally required scaffolding into automated operations, improving efficiency by more than 3 times.
Difficult damage detection is another challenge. The stress distribution of double-curved panels is complex, and crack development is uncertain. Qinglong Group monitors panel health through embedded sensors and periodic infrared testing. In the Nanning New Media Center project, we established a digital archive for each double-curved panel and promptly identified potential problems by comparing inspection data over time. For micro-cracks, industrial endoscopes are used for internal inspection, avoiding large-scale dismantling.
Cleaning and maintenance face technical challenges. The curved geometry of double-curved panels tends to accumulate dust and is difficult to clean. Qinglong Group developed dedicated cleaning agents and flexible cleaning tools to avoid damaging panel surfaces. In coastal projects, hydrophobic coatings were also added to reduce pollutant adhesion. Cleaning cycles are dynamically adjusted according to environmental conditions, ensuring aesthetics while controlling costs.
Maintenance and replacement require precise mold replication. Double-curved panels are one of a kind, and replacement requires remolding. Qinglong Group established a spare panel library that stores the molds and data of panels in critical locations, shortening emergency response times. Through a scientific O&M system, double-curved GRC curtain walls can fully achieve long-term safe use.
