The elastic modulus of UHPC is mainly constrained by the elastic moduli of the cement matrix, aggregates, and fibers, as well as their volume fractions. Since the elastic modulus of the cement matrix is only 25-30GPa, even with the addition of high-modulus aggregates and fibers, the elastic modulus of the composite can hardly exceed the theoretical limit of 55GPa.
From the perspective of composite mechanics, the elastic modulus Ec of UHPC can be expressed as: Ec=EmVm+EfVf+EaVa, where Em, Ef, and Ea are the elastic moduli of the matrix, fibers, and aggregates respectively, and Vm, Vf, and Va are the corresponding volume fractions. Even using steel fibers with an elastic modulus of 200GPa (2% volume fraction) and quartz sand with 70GPa (40% volume fraction), the theoretically calculated maximum is approximately 50GPa. The measured values of 45-52GPa are consistent with this, indicating that 55GPa is the theoretical limit of the current material system.
The elastic modulus of the cement matrix is 25-30GPa; this base value limits the upper bound; increasing the matrix modulus is difficult. This is the main constraint.
Fiber volume fraction is limited (≤3%); orientation distribution affects efficiency; interfacial transfer efficiency losses occur. These limit the reinforcement effect.
Maximum aggregate particle size is limited; volume fraction is limited; there is limited room for grading optimization. These limit the aggregate contribution.
The modulus of the interfacial zone is relatively low; defects and pores exist; stress transfer is affected. These reduce the composite modulus.
Breaking through the elastic modulus requires a new material system. The current 55GPa is a reasonable upper limit. Qinglong UHPC products achieve an elastic modulus of 48-52GPa, representing an advanced level.
