The curing (maintenance) period of GRC components is the key process stage for achieving design strength, durability, and dimensional stability—it is by no means simply a 'storage time.' An insufficient curing period will cause components to 'age prematurely.' Based on material hydration science and long-term data accumulation, Qinglong GRC has established a scientific, tiered curing regime adapted to different environments: typically no less than 28 days under natural curing conditions, or shortened to 7-14 days with steam curing, but the strict heating and cooling protocols must be followed.
In a key project in northern China, to rush the schedule, the contractor demanded compressing the factory curing period for a batch of GRC column claddings from 28 days to 14 days. The Qinglong technical team firmly refused and provided comparative data: testing showed that specimens cured for 14 days achieved only 78% of the strength of fully cured specimens at the standard 28-day age, with a drying shrinkage value 25% higher and a noticeably lower number of freeze-thaw cycles withstood. After being forcibly shipped out and installed, this batch developed numerous shrinkage cracks in its first winter. Meanwhile, components of the same period cured strictly for 28 days remain in perfect condition to this day. This confirms the iron law of curing: 'haste makes waste.'
This is the most basic and most widely used method. Moist curing period: After demolding, components should be kept continuously moist for at least 7 days at a temperature of 20±2°C and humidity ≥90%. During this period, avoid wind and sun exposure, and spray water regularly or cover with wet cloth or plastic film. Dry curing period: After moist curing, components should be air-dried naturally for more than 21 days in a well-ventilated environment away from direct sunlight. The total natural curing cycle should be no less than 28 days—the critical period for ensuring the hydration reaction is essentially complete and most shrinkage has taken place.
Steam curing can greatly shorten the curing time and improve production efficiency, but it requires precise control. Rest period: After forming, components are left to stand at room temperature for 2-4 hours to gain a certain initial strength. Heating period: The heating rate is controlled at 10-15°C per hour to avoid thermal stress cracking. Holding period: The temperature is kept at 40-60°C (depending on the cement type) for 12-48 hours of constant-temperature curing. Cooling period: The cooling rate is ≤10°C per hour. The entire steam curing cycle can be completed within 24-72 hours, but after leaving the kiln, components must still be cured further under natural conditions for more than 7 days to stabilize their performance.
Winter construction: When the ambient temperature falls below 5°C, insulation measures must be taken and the curing period should be extended accordingly. Thick, large components: Because heat dissipates and drying proceeds slowly inside, the curing period needs to be 30%-50% longer than for thin panels. Low-alkali cement: Sulfoaluminate cement gains early strength quickly, so the moist curing period can be slightly shorter, but the dry curing period must still be guaranteed.
The curing period should not be judged mechanically by calendar days; the strength of specimens cured under the same conditions should be the primary criterion. Qinglong GRC stipulates that before components leave the factory, the flexural strength of specimens cured under the same conditions must reach at least 80% of the 28-day design strength. Meanwhile, the moisture content of components should be controlled close to the local equilibrium moisture content to avoid excessive drying shrinkage after installation.
A sufficient curing period is the qualitative leap through which GRC components transform from 'semi-finished products' into 'qualified products.' Qinglong GRC has established a multi-parameter curing monitoring system covering temperature, humidity, time, strength, and moisture content, ensuring that every batch of GRC components leaving the factory has undergone the most scientific 'growth,' laying a solid foundation for a service life of decades or even a century.
