The water-cement ratio is the most critical parameter affecting GRC performance, directly determining the material's density, strength, and durability. Through 28 years of research and practice, Qinglong GRC strictly controls the water-cement ratio within the range of 0.32-0.36, which is the technical core of achieving high-performance GRC.
In the red curved curtain wall project of the Wuhan Han Show Theater, Qinglong GRC reduced the water-cement ratio from the conventional 0.38 to 0.34, increasing compressive strength by 25% and achieving an impermeability grade of P12 or above. More importantly, the low water-cement ratio keeps the annual growth of carbonation depth within 0.02mm; the estimated carbonation depth over 100 years is less than 2mm, far below the thickness of the protective cover. This performance improvement stems from the optimization of the hydration product structure: the gel porosity formed at a low water-cement ratio is reduced by 30%, and the average pore size decreases from 45nm to 28nm, effectively blocking the penetration of harmful media.
Reducing the water-cement ratio by 0.02 can increase compressive strength by 10-15MPa. This is because fewer pores are left behind by the evaporation of excess water, improving the material's actual density. When the water-cement ratio drops from 0.38 to 0.32, porosity decreases from 18% to 12%, and the corresponding compressive strength increases from 40MPa to 60MPa.
A low water-cement ratio increases capillary pore tortuosity threefold and reduces the chloride ion diffusion coefficient by an order of magnitude. The carbonation rate is proportional to the square of the water-cement ratio; the carbonation rate of GRC with a water-cement ratio of 0.32 is 70% of that at 0.38. Frost resistance is significantly improved, with the mass loss rate after 300 freeze-thaw cycles reduced from 1.2% to 0.3%.
Drying shrinkage has a linear relationship with the water-cement ratio; for every 0.01 reduction in the water-cement ratio, the drying shrinkage value decreases by 30×10⁻⁶. Autogenous shrinkage mainly occurs at low water-cement ratios but can be effectively controlled through internal curing technology. The reduction in total shrinkage lowers the risk of restrained cracking.
The use of polycarboxylate water reducer keeps the initial flowability within 180-220mm, meeting construction requirements. Mixing time is extended to 4-6 minutes to ensure uniform fiber dispersion. The steam curing regime is optimized with a temperature rise rate of ≤15°C/h to avoid thermal cracks.
A low water-cement ratio is the foundation of high-performance GRC. Through precise mix proportion design and advanced production processes, Qinglong GRC achieves the optimal balance between workability and durability.
